This junkie, gangster Joker is pretty edgy, bro.
Today, being the 75th anniversary of the Joker, David Ayer took to twitter to tweet out the first official image of Jared Leto’s take on the DCCU character in the now-filming Suicide Squad movie and oh boy is it a doozy:

Obviously since Heath Ledger’s iteration of the Joker is still fresh in people’s minds, Ayer has opted for a far-removed take on the character, trying to differentiate his version as best he can – weirdly choosing to go the route of a junkie, gangster Joker, that for some reason has tattooed actual images/dialogue from his own comic books on himself because in this universe I guess the Joker reads his own comic books and gets tattoos of them on himself. That’s TOTALLY something the character would do. Totally.
Other than the god-awful, inexcusable tattoos that resemble more of a fan-made drawing of the Joker than the actual character, there’s still hope that he could work on screen. The whole RiFF RAFF, white-gangster-rapper vibe is undoubtedly a weird, unexpected direction but also something Ayer might be able to pull off – again, only if those meta-tattoos are off the table. And Leto’s definitely got the freak in him too; though maybe he should start doing poses from something other than The Killing Joke.
What do you guys make of this? This first image definitely does not inspire much hope for Ayer and Leto’s take on the character, but it doesn’t crush my dreams just yet either. I’ll wait to see how he actually translates to film.
