Could the long awaited return for Johnny Depp: Actual Actor be upon us?
It’s been a looooooong time since we’ve seen Johnny Depp truly act. Believe it or not, there was once a time where he was a respected actor, and then Pirates Of The Caribbean happened. Which was, in all honesty, a pretty good performance in a pretty good movie but from then on – now an A-list actor – Depp never felt the need to really try. He mistook costumes and hairpieces for acting, hoping that upping the weird-factor might reinvigorate him. It never did.
But here we are, 12 years later, and it looks like the dark Johnny Depp days might finally be coming to an end. As seen in the first trailer for Scott Cooper’s (Crazy Heart, Out Of The Furnace) Black Mass, he’s actually trying:
“In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Joel Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.”
I’ve got my issues with Scott Cooper – namely, he’s a fascinating stylist but a rather boring storyteller – yet this is an incredibly effective trailer with more urgency and intrigue than all of Out Of The Furnace. Whether that means it’ll be a good film is obviously yet to be seen, but this trailer (and cast) gives me a lot of hope. We’re probably overdue for a great gangster movie and if it can also be the movie that genuinely reinvigorates Johnny Depp – bring it on.
Black Mass also stars Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Kevin Bacon, Jesse Plemons, Peter Sarsgaard and Corey Stoll. It opens on September 18th 2015.
