Prepare for even more graphic violence!

After recent talks with Jason Stathom publicly fell through, everyone was made aware of Marvel’s plans to move forward with Frank Castle aka The Punisher – an incredibly violent vigilante anti-hero – as a villainous presence in the upcoming 2nd season of Daredevil (a show I liked quite a bit!), but we were unsure who else they were even looking at. So today’s news from Marvel that Jon Bernthal – most well known for his role on The Walking Dead, but also appearing in a number of films including The Wolf Of Wall Street and Fury – has been selected to take on the role came as a complete surprise. This is what they had to say about the casting:

“Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences,” said Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television. “Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.”

I like Bernthal well enough. It’s hard to see him up against Thomas Jane but he definitely can have a threatening presence to him, something that Frank Castle lives and breathes. I’ve always seen him as Batman’s sadistic cousin. As for The Punisher’s particular role in the world of Daredevil, according to Marvel he’s going to aim “to clean up New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen by any means necessary, no matter how lethal the results.” That certainly jives with the violent world Marvel has built for Matt Murdock – a couple moments last year had him doing things I could imagine The Punisher doing to some bad guys, so I guess he’s going to be even more violent? Or maybe he’s just here to show Murdock that some of his actions in season one weren’t cool? I could see that.

What do you guys make of this?
