Finn Wolfhard Drops Debut Solo Indie Rock Album: Stranger Things Star Opens Up on Creative Journey

Finn Wolfhard, known for his role in Stranger Things, has launched his first solo indie rock album, marking a new chapter in his musical career. The Finn Wolfhard solo indie rock album release, titled Happy Birthday, draws inspiration from iconic songwriters and marks a personal journey into nostalgic sounds.

Wolfhard Embraces a New Musical Identity

Having led bands such as Calpurnia and The Aubreys, Finn Wolfhard takes a bold step with a self-titled debut, infusing Happy Birthday with elements reminiscent of Elliott Smith, Ben Lee, and Daniel Johnston. The album’s unique character is a blend of tape-saturated melodies and hints of garage-punk, inviting listeners into Wolfhard’s introspective and energetic vision. Reflecting on the decision to release music as a solo artist, Wolfhard initially considered masking his identity behind a band name.

“But then I kind of decided to just go fully in and just do it under my name,”

he shares.

“Because, you know, it’s a personal record.”

A Personal and Nostalgic Collection

Wolfhard’s creative process for the album involved writing approximately 50 songs in a single year. He carefully selected the tracks that resonated most deeply, opting to perform them himself. Happy Birthday channels a wistful longing for the past, a sentiment clear in songs like Crown.

“When you’re a kid, everything’s done for you/ Looking back, that was actually such a luxury.”

Reflecting on Life After Stranger Things

With the conclusion of Stranger Things, Wolfhard finds himself reflecting on a whirlwind decade spent growing up in the spotlight.

“I got to experience a once-in-a-lifetime thing while also just figuring out who I was,”

he explains.

“It was weird. And beautiful. And very, very public.”

Musical Influences and Collaborations

Joe Keery, a fellow Stranger Things cast member, played a pivotal role in shaping Wolfhard’s musical tastes.

“Joe [Keery] was highly influential for me… He sort of kicked off my love of indie rock,”

says Wolfhard, acknowledging Keery’s impact on his discovery of artists and the Chicago music scene. The relationship also offers ongoing creative support.

“He’s very highly influential for me. And also, someone that I ask for advice. I’ll send demos to [him], or even album covers or whatever it is, asking him what he thinks about it. Because he’s a very collaborative guy, and he’s a great guy to have.”
