Edi Gathegi preparation for Mister Terrific role in Superman has drawn attention following his recent discussion of the immense discipline required for the part. As Gathegi undertakes the portrayal of Michael Holt, known as Mister Terrific, in the upcoming Superman film, he described pushing himself both mentally and physically to take on this complex DC character.
Edi Gathegi commits to the role of Mister Terrific in Superman
Edi Gathegi is making history as the first actor to bring the character of Michael Holt, Mister Terrific, to life in a live-action feature film. Prior portrayals of Mister Terrific were limited to animated projects and television, most notably by Echo Kellum in the Arrowverse. In this new Superman adaptation, Gathegi joins a cast that includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, as well as Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Sara Sampaio, Wendell Pierce, Skylar Gisondo, and Frank Grillo.
During a guest appearance on the DC Studios Showcase Podcast, Gathegi described the unique demands that come with embodying a character considered both a physical and intellectual powerhouse. When asked about his approach to preparing for the role, he joked,
“Well, as you know, Mr. Terrific has 14 PhDs… So my preparation was to learn my lines.”

Gathegi went on to explain the extent of his commitment to authenticity in his performance:

“You just can’t really enter the body of somebody who’s this accomplished. However, I did read everything that I could get my hands on.I trained for about five months. I just consumed all the animation. Anything that had Mr. Terrific in it—I was trying to get my hands on it, but, you know, when you’re preparing any role, your level of investment and your level of commitment is depending on the degree of unsparingness of the character. So if you have a character that calls for great prep, you try to do that, and I’ve never played a character that was a decathlete. So I was pushing my body to the limits just so I could feel like I did everything that I could, that I turned over every stone before stepping on that set. Because the last thing that you want to do is step on a huge Hollywood production and feel like you don’t deserve to be there. My thing was, if you do as much work as you can, you’re going to feel confident when you step on that set.”

He further revealed his dedication as a comic enthusiast, noting that his favorite version of Mister Terrific comes from the video game universe:
“In Injustice, that’s when I understood he was operating at a different level. Like, this guy can do anything.”

An in-depth look at Gathegi’s portrayal and evolution from previous superhero roles
Mister Terrific is not Edi Gathegi’s first foray into the superhero genre, but this role stands apart from his previous performance as Darwin in X-Men: First Class. While Darwin’s limited involvement in the film did not allow Gathegi to deeply explore the character, Mister Terrific presents new opportunities due to Michael Holt’s exceptional intellect, athleticism, and moral complexity. Gathegi made it clear that this incarnation of Mister Terrific will bring something fresh to the big screen, saying,
“We found something that I think is a little bit more interesting, a little bit deeper, a little bit more complex, a little bit more unhinged.”
—Edi Gathegi, Actor
Speaking about the unique challenges of giving life to a multi-layered character, Gathegi expressed:
“I mean, comic books, 2D, you can get deep, and you can get complex, but humanity is more complex. So I think Mr. Terrific just has more layers.”
—Edi Gathegi, Actor
Throughout his preparation, Gathegi placed a strong emphasis on embodying every dimension of Michael Holt, making sure to encompass the unique combination of brains and brawn that defines Mister Terrific. This rigorous process not only required physical training—matching the discipline of a decathlete—but also deep research into comics, animations, and other portrayals, aiming for a performance that stands out.
Mister Terrific’s impact and the anticipation for Superman’s theatrical release
For longtime DC fans and new audiences alike, the big-screen debut of Mister Terrific promises excitement and a new layer of complexity for the cinematic universe. Gathegi’s multi-faceted approach, spanning everything from intense physical preparation to detailed study of every existing take on the character, demonstrates his respect for this role and its place in Superman’s world.
The actor expressed his hopes for the broader significance of his portrayal:
“I’m excited to inspire a whole generation of young Black kids with this new superhero. Mr. Terrific is so fantastic of a character, and there is so much potential.”
—Edi Gathegi, Actor
Gathegi’s debut as Mister Terrific will occur in Superman, which is scheduled for release on July 11, 2025. The film will see him working alongside David Corenswet as Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and supporting talent such as Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Sara Sampaio, Wendell Pierce, Skylar Gisondo, and Frank Grillo, further raising expectations for the ensemble cast.
