James Gunn reveals DC Studios updates: New Superman details, Batman casting rumors, and Teen Titans plans clarified

James Gunn reveals DC Studios updates on Superman and future projects as he engaged with fans online, addressing speculation around upcoming films, character casting, and costume choices. Just as the studio gears up to begin its international promotional campaign in Manila for the latest Superman film, Gunn provided clarity on several rumors and shared fresh insights on the next phase of the DCU.

James Gunn Engages Fans and Addresses Rumors

Returning to Threads, James Gunn fielded a range of fan questions covering the DCU’s direction, particularly relating to Superman and other highly anticipated projects. Gunn, who now serves as co-chair of DC Studios, debunked several circulating rumors and offered a transparent look at ongoing developments.

He affirmed that the Waller spinoff is still progressing and has not shifted to become a ‘Checkmate’ series, and stated there has been no private screening of Superman for Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige. When asked about the ongoing debate regarding the look of Batman’s mask, Gunn admitted he did not understand the fascination with whether the cowl should have white eyes. Gunn holds final approval over the visual designs for DCU costumes, but made it clear he delegates these significant creative decisions to the filmmakers. Additionally, he commented about the approach to casting within the DC Universe, writing,

He also noted audiences should expect heroes to sport updated costumes whenever they appear in sequels or make cameo appearances in other productions. Gunn definitively put to rest rumors about imminent Teen Titans casting sessions or Batman casting processes—confirming neither are currently underway. He did, however, hint that several DCU projects not yet publicly announced are nearing official approval.

Responding to Box Office Sabotage Claims

Among the more light-hearted moments in Gunn’s exchange, he addressed efforts by “#RestoreTheSnyderVerse Die-Hards” allegedly aiming to undermine Superman’s box office results.

“LOL I think we’ll survive. I’m not sure the eight people that listen to that guy (I’m going to go out on a limb and guess it’s a guy) are going to impact the course of events.”

Clarification on Lanterns Series and Story Direction

Gunn also explained what he meant by describing the upcoming Lanterns show as “grounded.” According to Gunn, the word grounded does not limit the story’s setting to Earth, but rather speaks to the nature of its characters and narrative.

“That’s not what I mean by grounded. I meant grounded in terms of fully rounded characters making realistic choices. Many off-world science fiction stories are grounded.”
