Sydney Sweeney prepares for Echo Valley role as addict by immersing herself in the world of heroin addiction to authentically portray Claire, a troubled young woman whose destructive path explodes into chaos at her mother‘s secluded home in Apple TV+’s new psychological thriller. Sweeney and co-star Julianne Moore deliver intense performances as their characters confront deep family trauma and danger, navigating the fallout of dangerous decisions in a tense rural setting.
Sweeney’s Creative Approach to a Challenging Character
In Echo Valley, Sydney Sweeney’s character, Claire, spirals into addiction-driven chaos, arriving at her mother Kate’s rural farmhouse high, distressed, and covered in evidence of violence. The story quickly escalates into a deadly confrontation as mother and daughter, played by Julianne Moore and Sweeney respectively, are forced to deal with the consequences of Claire’s unpredictable actions.
Sweeney described the emotional demands of her role, highlighting how Moore’s acting expertise allowed her to dig deep into difficult emotional territory.
“When you have a scene partner like Julianne, it’s not as hard as you would think,”
she told Variety about some of the film’s rawest scenes.
“She is such an amazing actress and just so emotionally available and open, it makes you feel safe. So I felt very, very comfortable going to very deep raw places.”

Turning to Real Stories for Authentic Portrayal
In preparation for Echo Valley, Sweeney turned to the internet for research, aiming to understand the realities of addiction as experienced by those on the edge. She found a YouTube series that documents life on Skid Row, following interviews with people struggling with addiction in real time.

“I watched a lot of videos. There’s a YouTube series of this guy that interviews people on Skid Row that have struggled with addiction and are [still] currently. I watched a lot of them and drew from different stories that they would tell or mannerisms that they have.”

Sweeney asserted that some of her most impactful choices came from being present in the moment rather than scripting every emotional response.
“Sometimes, to be honest, I don’t really plan anything, or I don’t like to think it through,”
she explained, laughing at her approach.
“I don’t know if that’s great, but for me, it’s like, you don’t really rehearse a conversation that you’re gonna have. Like, I didn’t rehearse things out. I kind of like being able to see whatever’s gonna happen, happen. It’s really exciting. And then you can learn in the process and discover new things.”

Tension Builds in Echo Valley’s Twisting Storyline
The thriller’s plot centers on the aftermath of Claire’s urgent arrival at her mother’s home, its peaceful calm shattered by revelations of trauma, violence, and complicity. As mother and daughter are forced to cover up dire consequences and confront hidden truths, the relationship between Claire and Kate is tested by fear, betrayal, and a fierce protective instinct. Amidst this emotionally charged narrative, both characters must face the cost of protecting one another at all odds.
Moore emphasized the unique blend of dramatic and suspenseful elements within the film.
“It’s a domestic drama wrapped in a thriller, which is very unusual,”
she noted, positioning the story within a tradition of films focused on women facing extraordinary challenges.
“It really reminded me of those sort of old-fashioned movies from the forties where there was a woman at the center of a story, a woman who seemed rather ordinary, who was able to achieve kind of extraordinary things. I was really grateful to be able to do something like that because these kinds of stories don’t come along very often.”

Off-Screen Bonding Fuels On-Screen Intensity
Despite the high emotional stakes depicted, Sweeney revealed that the dynamic between herself and Moore was built on mutual respect and camaraderie. Their off-screen connection helped ease the weight of portraying such turbulent, emotionally fraught scenes.
“It was very emotional, the scenes that we were filming were complex and deep and very electrically charged, but we were having so much fun together,”
Sweeney said.
“Like, at any moment we would call cut. We were laughing and talking and having a good time together and with the crew. So what you see on camera wasn’t what was off camera.”
