Mahershala Ali, who has long been set to portray Eric Brooks for Marvel Studios, has reaffirmed that he is ready to take on the Blade reboot, even as the project faces continued delays and uncertainty. The highly anticipated film, which was first revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, has been pulled from the release schedule, and obstacles behind the scenes have left fans and cast members waiting for updates on its future.
The Blade reboot has faced multiple setbacks since its announcement, with its struggles made public over the past several years. During the recent Jurassic World Rebirth premiere, Mahershala Ali was asked on the red carpet by Variety reporters about when audiences could expect the film. The actor responded,
“Call Marvel. I’m ready. Let them know I’m ready.”

Marvel Studios planned for Blade to be part of Phase 5, originally intending to release the film on November 3, 2023, positioned between The Marvels and Ironheart. Filming was scheduled for October 2022 in Atlanta, but the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes brought pre-production to a halt. Days before filming, director Bassam Tariq exited the project citing scheduling issues, prompting Marvel to appoint Yann Demange as his replacement. However, Demange also stepped down in June 2024, compounding the project’s troubles. The film’s release was postponed to November 7, 2025, but that date was eventually scrapped, forcing Marvel Studios to shuffle its entire slate of movies.

Unfinished Plans and Shifting Roles
Following Demange’s departure last year, Marvel Studios has yet to name a new director for Blade. Despite the chaos, Michael Green and Eric Pearson are still attached as writers. Mahershala Ali remains set for the main role of Blade, with supporting cast members Mia Goth, John West Jr., and Milan Ray slated to join him.
Cast changes have further impacted the project, as Aaron Pierre, initially announced in 2022 for an undisclosed role, left the lineup in 2024 due to commitments elsewhere, possibly with DC’s Lanterns. Delroy Lindo, brought on in 2021, also exited after describing the project as having gone “off the rails.” These departures have cast additional doubt over the reboot’s direction, as the revolving door of talent has become a hallmark of its development.
Blade’s Sparse Presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
Blade has not appeared on screen since a vocal cameo in the post-credit scene of the 2021 movie Eternals. While the character made a type of “return” in 2024, it was Wesley Snipes’ Blade joining Ryan Reynolds (as Deadpool) in Deadpool & Wolverine, rather than Mahershala Ali’s interpretation. This has left fans awaiting a true introduction for the new Blade within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The ongoing delays have left the future of the Blade reboot and its scheduled release in question. Marvel Studios has not issued any confirmation on when or if Blade will rejoin its movie lineup, and fans must continue to endure the suspenseful wait as more updates are anticipated from Variety or Marvel itself.
The setbacks not only shape Mahershala Ali’s path forward but also affect Marvel’s broader cinematic timeline and the roles of key figures such as Kevin Feige, Mia Goth, and others involved. With
“Mahershala Ali ready for Blade reboot”
remaining the rallying cry of those supporting the project, Marvel now faces increasing pressure to make decisive moves, either to revive Blade or let the project fade further into uncertainty.
