DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn recently announced that new DCU projects from Korea, Japan, and Brazil are currently in development. While specific details remain limited, fans widely believe the Korean project mentioned is the long-rumored Huntress movie, first reported in 2023. This film is anticipated to expand the DC Universe with a global perspective, featuring diverse languages and casts.
Pom Klementieff Expected to Lead as Helena Bertinelli
Reports have indicated that South Korean filmmaker Jung Byung-gil, known for Action Boys and The Villainess, is in talks to write and direct the Huntress movie. Likewise, rumors suggest Pom Klementieff, who has Korean heritage, remains attached to star as Helena Bertinelli, the Huntress character. Notably, this portrayal will present the character as half-Korean and half-Italian, reflecting Klementieff’s background.
Klementieff is recognized for her roles in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the recent Mission: Impossible films, showcasing her capability in dramatic and action-oriented roles. Though she might seem an unconventional choice to some fans familiar only with her MCU work, her repertoire aligns well with the demands of the Huntress character.
Previous Portrayals and DCU Revamp Context
Huntress was last played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). However, Winstead’s return as the character seems unlikely following the DC Universe relaunch. The Huntress project itself has not yet been officially announced, but Gunn has publicly expressed admiration for Byung-gil’s filmmaking during a visit to Seoul, adding credence to the project’s development.
International Elements and Cross-Project Integration
According to Nexus Point News, the Huntress film is part of a larger slate of international DCU projects that emphasize local storytelling. Gunn shared,
“The core elements that make up Huntress will be present in the several other projects being developed as part of DC Studios’ international slate. These elements include, an international setting, the series being written and spoken in that country’s respective language, and a cast composed of actors from that respective country.”

Additionally, these projects aim to connect with the broader DCU by featuring characters who will eventually appear in English-language productions, enhancing continuity across global and domestic content. While many of these undertakings are expected to be TV series or animated shows, Huntress may remain the sole feature film.
What the Future Holds for DCU’s Global Expansion
This international approach to the DCU marks a significant shift in how superhero stories are told, focusing more on authentic regional experiences combined with a global narrative. Pom Klementieff’s involvement as Huntress reinforces this creative direction, blending cultural backgrounds into beloved characters. As more details emerge, fans can anticipate more diverse storytelling and potential crossover between these foreign-language projects and the main DC Universe.
