David Corenswet and James Gunn have developed a strong creative bond while working on the upcoming Superman reboot. Corenswet, who will portray the iconic superhero under Gunn’s direction, recently spoke about their unique partnership and why their collaboration feels naturally fitting. The project is already generating attention with a release date set for July 11, 2025.
Corenswet’s Perspective on Working with James Gunn
In an interview with GQ, David Corenswet described the connection he shares with James Gunn as a meeting of creative minds that quickly fell into place. Corenswet explained how Gunn’s direct approach suits his own need for clear guidance, especially as he takes on the mantle of Superman for the first time. The 32-year-old actor described Gunn’s style as direct and straightforward, often offering sharp instructions to the artists during filming.
Regarding this working method, Corenswet commented,
I think in a lot of ways, James and I are made for each other.
He admitted that this approach works well for him because
because I have no idea what I’m doing.
Corenswet expressed the importance of having a director who clearly communicates expectations, saying,
I desperately need a director. I need a director who knows what they want and is willing to say it out loud without too much politeness and without beating around the bush. If I’m no good, tell me I’m no good, and then let’s work together to make me good.
James Gunn’s View on Their Professional Dynamic
James Gunn has also reflected on their productive dynamic, highlighting that Corenswet’s emotional resilience creates a smooth working environment. Gunn pointed out that unlike many actors, Corenswet is less sensitive, which allows them to communicate openly without extra care that might otherwise be needed. Gunn explained,
And we have a really, to me, beautiful relationship in that way because I’m used to being very sensitive with actors, and you have to be by default, because many actors are incredibly sensitive because they’re putting their emotions on the line onscreen. But with David, he’s not that way. He’s not sensitive like that.
Supporting Cast and Anticipation for the Film
The Superman reboot also stars Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult, adding a strong supporting cast to the highly anticipated project. With James Gunn co-leading DC and Corenswet stepping into the role of the Man of Steel, the film aims to bring a fresh take to the superhero’s story when it premieres in theaters in the summer of 2025.
