Emma Stone has made a striking return to the music video scene with a uniquely surreal and atmospheric short film for Jerskin Fendrix’s new track, “Beth’s Farm.” Released as part of Fendrix’s upcoming album, the video reunites Stone with director Yorgos Lanthimos, continuing their ongoing creative collaboration. The ethereal visual was shot on a farm setting, blending haunting imagery with understated farm life activities.
A Visual Journey Through Childhood and Mystery on the Farm
The video opens with Jerskin Fendrix wandering through what seems to be his childhood home and farmland, setting an introspective mood. Emma Stone makes an unforgettable entrance by falling out of a tree dressed in distinctive black rain boots and a burgundy barn jacket paired with a messy pixie cut. The pair takes on daily farm duties—carrying hay bales, tending to horses and cows—with moments of synchronized movement that add a surreal touch. At one point, Stone is shown laying motionless on a rural road before reappearing driving a tractor, intensifying the dreamlike narrative.
Symbolic Rituals and Haunting Imagery Close the Video
In the climactic scenes, Stone and Fendrix ignite a bonfire made of various personal and symbolic objects such as a piano, fingernail clippings, and household furniture. Their wild dance around the flames is both captivating and eerie. The video closes with them spreading the ashes inside a barn and a recurring motif—a mound of soil—slowly growing atop a small bed, tying together themes of transformation and memory.
Lasting Partnerships Fuel New Artistic Endeavors
This project marks another collaboration between Stone, Lanthimos, and Fendrix, following their work on the 2023 film Poor Things. That movie, an adaptation of Alasdair Gray’s novel, earned significant accolades including an Ivor Novello award for Fendrix’s score and an Academy Award for Stone’s performance. The trio also worked together on Kinds of Kindness and are preparing to release Bugonia, a darkly comedic sci-fi film later this year.
Creative Bonds Between Stone, Lanthimos, and Fendrix
Stone and Lanthimos share a well-established artistic relationship, previously collaborating on films such as The Favourite and the short film Bleat. “Beth’s Farm” stands as the lead single from Fendrix’s sophomore album Once Upon A Time . . . In Shropshire, scheduled for release on October 10. Lanthimos reflected on the project, describing the reunion as a way to add cinematic storytelling to Fendrix’s personal musical work.
“It was lovely to team up again with Emma and a number of people that we have been working with for quite a while to contribute a bit of film narrative to what I think is a remarkable second personal album by our very important artistic collaborator and friend, Jerskin Fendrix,”
