Julia Garner recently addressed the uncertainty surrounding the Madonna biopic, confirming that the film project is moving forward after previous setbacks. Initially announced by Universal Pictures in 2020, the project had been put on hold in 2023 before resuming production in 2024. Garner’s update brings clarity to fans awaiting this depiction of the legendary pop star’s life.
The Actress Shares Her Casting Experience and Admiration for Madonna
At 31 years old, Julia Garner spoke candidly about her involvement in the biopic during an appearance on the SmartLess podcast with hosts Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes. Addressing questions about the film’s status, she confirmed, “That’s supposed to still happen,” reassuring listeners of the project’s continuation. She also revealed her deep admiration for Madonna, noting a personal connection through the music icon’s influence on her upbringing.
Describing the casting process, Garner recalled how she approached the opportunity without professional dance training but was determined to demonstrate her ability.
“I was such a fan of Madonna’s. Um, you know, I grew up listening to Madonna. It just came about. I knew they were doing a project, making a movie about it, and then I went out to audition. I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it, because I wasn’t a trained dancer, and I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically, and sing. And sing with her!”
She further explained the mindset she adopted during her audition, stating,
“OK, what would Madonna do? Which is convince you that she deserves, you know, to be in this room, and I owned it. I was kind of like, ‘You can take it or leave it, but if you leave it, if I leave, then that’s on you.’”
Timeline and Future Prospects of the Biopic Project
Julia Garner was cast as Madonna in 2022, but the film was shelved shortly after. Despite this delay, production on the highly anticipated biopic—tentatively called Who’s That Girl—resumed in 2024. With Garner’s confirmation and renewed activity from Universal Pictures, the film project now appears positioned to move into its next phases, reigniting interest in the portrayal of the iconic singer’s life story.
This development highlights the challenges often faced in bringing high-profile biopics to fruition but also underscores the commitment of the filmmakers and lead actress to capturing Madonna’s legacy on screen. Fans and industry watchers alike will be watching closely as this project evolves.
