Former President Donald Trump recently sparked controversy with a poorly executed impression of late actor Sean Connery, during the opening of a new golf course in Aberdeen, Scotland. The incident, which gained attention on social media platform X, highlighted Trump’s false claims about Connery’s involvement in the golf course approval process, fueling further debate over the accuracy of his statements and his portrayal of the beloved actor.
Trump Praises Scotland Golf Course Named for His Mother
At the event in Aberdeen, Trump celebrated the launch of a golf course named after his late mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, who was born in Scotland. Proudly discussing the project, Trump claimed the development had faced significant hurdles. He described how local officials initially refused to zone the land, commenting,
“The land, they said, it couldn’t get zoned,”
before attempting to imitate Sean Connery to justify overcoming these challenges with the phrase,
“Let the bloody bloke build his golf course!”
This statement accompanied by the impression, however, was widely regarded as inaccurate and disrespectful, casting doubt on the ex-president’s reliability in recounting this story.
Sean Connery Expressed Support But Did Not Officially Intervene
Sean Connery, who passed away in 2020, did show support for the golf course idea as a boost for Scottish tourism, but evidence shows he was not actively involved in the planning process. After Connery’s death, Trump publicly claimed that the actor had vocally supported his golf course project and helped expedite approvals. Trump posted on X that Connery

“stepped in and shouted, ‘Let him build the damn thing,’”
taking credit for the actor’s supposed impact on the planning outcome.
However, this claim was debunked by Martin Ford, former chair of the planning committee responsible for approving the course. Ford clarified that Connery
“was not involved in the due process that led to the granting of planning permission for a golf resort at Menie.”
He emphasized that Connery did not submit any formal representations, attend hearings, or participate in public inquiries related to the development.
Ford further noted that
“Opinions offered in press articles are not material considerations in decisions on planning applications,”
explaining that while Connery liked the concept, his views carried no legal weight in securing project approval.
Conflicting Narratives Fuel Debate Over Trump’s Claims and Conduct
The clash between Trump’s public account and official planning records illustrates ongoing questions about the former president’s approach to facts and rhetoric. His exaggerated portrayal of Connery’s involvement, combined with the awkward impression, has drawn criticism for both disrespecting the memory of the late actor and spreading misinformation. Trump’s prior admission that his wife Melania disapproves of his impersonations adds a personal dimension to the public reaction, highlighting the broader unease surrounding his performances.
The controversy is significant as it touches on Trump’s tendency to distort events and claim credit where none is due, undermining public trust. Observers expect that similar incidents will continue to prompt scrutiny as he remains a prominent figure in political and social discourse.
