After stepping away from social media for two years, actor Taron Egerton recently reactivated his accounts to promote his new movie, She Rides Shotgun. However, the 35-year-old star made it clear that this return will be only temporary, as he plans to disconnect again shortly after the film’s release.
Past Reasons for Leaving Social Platforms
Egerton first left Instagram in June 2023, sharing that social media made him feel disconnected from himself. He explained that his usage had become addictive and decided to make a firm commitment to reduce its impact on his life.
I just think it’s hard to break away from a cycle that I’ve grown to find a bit addictive and this is me making a commitment to myself,
Taron said two years ago.
Current Experience of Returning to Social Media
While promoting She Rides Shotgun, Egerton acknowledged the necessity of reengaging with social media to raise awareness about his film, which he described as a “little engine” facing challenges in gaining exposure. Despite this, he expressed feeling worse during this brief comeback and does not believe that social media is good for mental health.
I got back on to promote this movie,
Egerton shared on The Today Show on July 29.
This movie is a bit of a little engine. It’s harder to spread the word of a movie of this size. So I got back on social media and look, this is heavy for this time in the morning, but I feel worse. I genuinely don’t think it’s good for your mental health. I will be hopping back off once the film is out.

Concerns About Social Media’s Impact on Mental Health
Egerton highlighted the psychological toll social media can have, particularly on younger users. He mentioned his worries about his teenage sisters who, like many, take the curated images of happiness and socializing at face value without questioning their authenticity.
Sorry to end things on a grim note! I don’t think we talk about it enough. I just think scrolling through images where you see 10 people laughing, having the best time ever, in the space of 30 seconds, messes with your head. I worry about my sisters being teenagers, and the way they don’t question it. So, although I’ve kind of eaten my words and gotten back on to promote a film, I’m going to leave again because I think I’m better off without it,
Egerton added.
Wider Impact of Celebrity Social Media Breaks
Taron Egerton’s decision to step away from social media follows a growing trend among public figures who recognize the mental health challenges linked to these platforms. His candid reflections on the pressures of online presence and the temporary nature of his return underline the continuing conversation about digital wellness.
