Welsh actor Taron Egerton has openly dismissed the idea of taking on the next James Bond role, despite his past experience in the spy genre as the lead in Matthew Vaughn’s Kingsman series. In a recent interview with Collider, Egerton explained that he does not consider himself the right candidate for Amazon’s upcoming iteration of the iconic franchise.
When questioned about his interest in portraying the British spy, Egerton said,
No. And I don’t think I’m a good choice for it. I think I’m too messy for that.

Egerton Reflects on Bond Legacy and Casting Preferences
The 35-year-old actor admitted his admiration for the character, especially praising Daniel Craig’s previous portrayal. However, he expressed doubts about his own suitability for the role, citing a preference for exploring other projects. Egerton added,
particularly Daniel Craig’s tenure. But I think I wouldn’t be good at it, and I think there’s so many cool, younger actors who would be great for it. I think it would be wasted on me, probably.

With MGM now under Amazon’s ownership, the next Bond film is already being planned, with Dune director Denis Villeneuve attached. Reports suggest a release date in 2028, and industry insiders have indicated that Amazon favors casting a British actor under 30. Names such as Jacob Elordi, Tom Holland, and Harris Dickinson are reportedly top contenders, even though Elordi is Australian, which reportedly is not a disqualifier.

Egerton’s Outlook on Future Roles and Bond’s Demands
Currently promoting the crime thriller She Rides Shotgun, Egerton revealed he is not entirely averse to taking on more commercial roles in the future but is presently focused on projects that fulfill him creatively. He said,
I think I’m a period in my life where, as you say, I’ve been probably following the things that speak to me on a creative level a little bit more, but, you know, I’m sure I won’t feel that way forever,

Addressing the immense commitment the Bond role demands, Egerton explained that he is unaware of any offers and emphasized the heavy personal investment required. He concluded,
James Bond is quite an undertaking and I think, one, as far as I’m aware, nobody’s asking me to do it, But also, it’s possibly not quite the thing that would make me happiest. I do think it’s a big old undertaking, it kind of consumes your life, a role like that.

What This Means for the Future of James Bond Casting
Egerton’s withdrawal from serious consideration leaves the door open for younger actors favored by Amazon and MGM, aligning with the reported focus on casting a youthful British talent for the next Bond film. With Denis Villeneuve set to direct and a possible 2028 release, speculation continues over who will next don the iconic tuxedo. The industry remains attentive to the evolving selection process as new names emerge and production advances.
