James Gunn Clarifies DCU Canon: What’s Official as Peacemaker Season 2 Expands the Story

Since James Gunn’s appointment as co-CEO of Warner Bros.’ DC Studios, fans have been eager to understand what will be recognized as official within the evolving DC Universe. Despite expectations of a complete reboot, Gunn confirmed that the second season of Peacemaker, a show rooted in the DCEU and featuring cameos from Justice League members such as Aquaman and The Flash, will continue and expand the storyline.

The situation is further complicated by Gunn’s involvement with The Suicide Squad, the film from which Peacemaker was spun off, raising questions about which elements remain canonical.

Clarifying the Layers of Canon in the DCU

In previous statements, Gunn provided insight into how canon will be structured moving forward. He emphasized that only content from Creature Commandos and beyond should be considered pure canon. Gunn explained that certain plot points, such as the fate of Rick Flag Jr., are confirmed in Creature Commandos rather than The Suicide Squad, illustrating this approach.

He elaborated,

“Only CC forward is pure canon; Peacemaker is almost entirely consistent with that canon other than the Justice League; The Suicide Squad has a lot of consistencies, but I think of it as an imperfect memory.”

This indicates that while Peacemaker season 1 largely fits within the new canon, The Suicide Squad may reflect events as imperfect recollections rather than definitive history.

What is Confirmed Canon as Peacemaker Season 2 Approaches?

Most recently, Gunn simplified the canon rules in a short video released by the official Peacemaker X account. According to the video, Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker season 2 are now considered official parts of the DCU canon. Furthermore, anything a character refers to happening in the former DCEU will be incorporated into the new canon framework.

Although season 2 of Peacemaker is expected to address discrepancies—like the Justice League’s appearance in season 1—Gunn suggested it will not rely on ideas such as a pocket dimension to resolve these contradictions.

Exploring New Dimensions and Deeper Themes in Peacemaker Season 2

Peacemaker season 2 is set to delve into two distinct dimensions, a narrative core Gunn highlighted in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. He clarified that the show does not simply distinguish between old DCEU and the new DCU; instead, it handles the integration of these realities more directly.

Gunn further explained,

“But it’s not as if one of these is old DCEU and one’s DCU. That’s dealt with in a different way, very upfront in a season where most everything in Season One is canon and some things are not. And in fact, I did a podcast with [actors] Steve Agee and Jen Holland. And we did every episode of Peacemaker, and in those episodes, I talk about what’s canon and what’s not. I basically chip off little things from Peacemaker Season One that aren’t canon, like Aquaman. But most of the stuff is canon.”

The new season focuses on Christopher “Chris” Smith, aka Peacemaker, confronting his traumatic past and seeking peace, all while continuing his pursuit of justice through sometimes questionable means. Gunn described the core plot:

“In season 2, Peacemaker discovers an alternate world where life is everything he wishes it could be. But this discovery also forces him to face his traumatic past and take the future into his own hands.”

Future Implications for the DC Universe and Peacemaker’s Role

The official continuation of Peacemaker, alongside Creature Commandos and Superman stories, signals a selective but expansive growth of the DCU canon under Gunn’s leadership. By clarifying what is and isn’t canonical, Gunn is crafting a cohesive narrative framework that supports new storytelling while respectfully integrating elements from the past.

This approach will likely shape how fans perceive character developments and future DC Studios projects. Given that Peacemaker season 2 premieres on August 21, audiences can expect to see how these dimensional storylines unfold and influence the broader DCU.

Gunn’s efforts to maintain continuity, while addressing past inconsistencies, reflect a thoughtful strategy to reinvigorate the DC Universe with a blend of new and familiar elements.
