When asked by Variety about Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige’s efforts to bring him back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Harrison Ford gave a straightforward and unmistakable answer. His response was simply, “Nope,” without further explanation, reflecting Ford’s typical candid style. This exchange highlights Ford’s clear stance on reprising his role in the MCU, despite his recent introduction to the franchise.
Ford’s Role as Thunderbolt Ross and Its Context in the MCU
Ford recently joined the MCU by stepping into the role of President Thaddeus Thunderbolt Ross in Captain America: Brave New World, taking over from William Hurt, who originally portrayed the character starting in 2008. Ford’s Ross is depicted as a newly elected U.S. President who also harbors the ability to transform into the Red Hulk, a dual identity that adds complexity and intensity to the character within the Marvel universe. This fresh iteration showcases a different dimension to Ross compared to previous portrayals.
Open to Character Development But Not Immediate Return
Although Ford declined to return to the MCU at this time, he has expressed a willingness to see his character evolve beyond just the Red Hulk persona. In a prior interview, Ford said,
“I hope he can come back,”
and added,
“I hope [there’s] a story in which he can develop into something other than the Red Hulk. I think we have the capacity to shift shape between Hulkness and humanity, but that’s really not my department. I was very happy with the opportunity to play in this playground.”
Marvel’s Continuing Storylines and Ford’s Recognition of the Franchise
Captain America: Brave New World furthered the MCU narrative by officially passing the Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson, played by Anthony Mackie, who teams up with Joaquin Torres, portrayed by Danny Ramirez, as the new Falcon. Ford acknowledged the solid foundation that William Hurt laid for the character and expressed admiration for the larger Marvel world and its talent.

Reflecting on the role, Ford said,
“I’d like to think the character was a great fit for me. I was honored to be able to do my work on top of a foundation that a wonderful actor, Bill Hurt, provided for the character.”
He also shared,
“And the story is a wonderful extension of the stories that Thunderbolt Ross has been part of. I’ve watched Marvel movies and seen actors I really liked, really admired, have a great time. And I thought, ‘Hey, I want me some of that.’”
Future MCU Releases and the Potential for Ross’s Return
Currently, there are no announcements confirming whether Ford’s Thunderbolt Ross will appear again in future MCU projects. However, the slight openness Ford has shown offers some hope to fans. Upcoming MCU offerings include Eyes of Wakanda, an animated Black Panther series premiering on Disney+ on August 1, which explores the legacy of Wakandan warriors. Additionally, Spider-Man 4 is scheduled for release next summer, promising more big-screen Marvel action.
As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to evolve, the status of Harrison Ford’s presence remains uncertain, leaving audiences attentive to possible future developments involving his character.
