Finn Wolfhard Teases Twin Peaks-Style Stranger Things Spinoff Exploring Upside Down Mythology

As the fifth and final season of Stranger Things approaches its release, Netflix‘s interest in expanding the series through spinoffs continues to grow. Finn Wolfhard, who plays Mike Wheeler, recently shared insights during an interview with Variety about a potential new series that delves deeper into the Stranger Things universe, focusing on the mysterious Upside Down.

Exploring a Unique Anthology Concept Inspired by Twin Peaks

Wolfhard revealed that the Duffer brothers, Ross and Matt, have been developing an idea for an anthology-style spinoff reminiscent of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. He described it as:

“like David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Sort of an anthology and different tones but similar universe or same universe. I think set in different places and all tied together through this mythology of the Upside Down. Don’t even talk about Hawkins. Don’t have any mention of our characters. They were toying around with ideas in case Netflix wanted them. I’m sure they do, and I’m sure it will happen, but there’s nothing official. I think the coolest way, the way that I would do it, there has to be labs everywhere. If there was one in Hawkins, there’s one in Russia. Where else could they be?”

This spinoff would expand the Stranger Things world beyond Hawkins, exploring different locations and narratives connected through the shared Upside Down mythology without involving the original characters directly.

Distinguishing From Existing Animated Spinoff

While the anthology concept evokes a darker, more atmospheric tone, it appears distinct from the only officially announced spinoff so far: the animated series Stranger Things: Tales From ’85. The Duffer brothers told Tudum that this animated show aims to capture the spirit of classic Saturday morning cartoons and features familiar characters from the original series. Wolfhard’s description suggests the anthology would instead focus on new stories and settings within the Upside Down’s reach.

Significance and Future of the Stranger Things Universe

With Stranger Things maintaining its position as a cultural phenomenon, these emerging spinoff ideas indicate that the franchise’s mythology will continue to expand in innovative ways. The first part of the fifth season premieres on November 26, 2025, and while no official announcements have been made about the anthology spinoff, Netflix likely sees potential in further exploring the show‘s dark, mysterious world.
