Ariana DeBose to Star in The Baker’s Wife, Bringing New Life to NYC Premiere Musical

Ariana DeBose will portray Geneviève in the upcoming production of The Baker’s Wife, marking the musical’s first full-scale presentation in New York City. This new staging brings renewed attention to the story of a small French village, where the arrival of a baker and his young wife disrupts the daily routine.

The Musical’s Background and Creative Origins

The Baker’s Wife features a score by Stephen Schwartz, known for hits like Wicked and Pippin, with a book written by Joseph Stein, whose work includes Fiddler on the Roof. The story draws from the 1938 French film La Femme du Boulanger, created by Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono, and captures the charm and troubles of provincial life in France. Despite its creation in 1976, this powerful musical has never been fully produced on a New York stage until now.

Creative Team and Production Details

The production is directed by Gordon Greenberg and will be hosted at Classic Stage Company’s Lynn F Angelson Theater, running from October 23 to December 15, 2025. It is presented through a special arrangement with the Menier Chocolate Factory, led by artistic director David Babani, which previously staged a London revival. Additional casting and creative team members are yet to be announced. Aaron Glick is also involved as a producer.
