Daniel Kaluuya Develops Spider-Punk Spin-Off, Expanding the Spider-Verse Universe with New Animated Film

Daniel Kaluuya is set to develop a new animated spin-off centered on Spider-Punk, a character he voiced in the film Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. The project expands the Spider-Verse franchise while spotlighting the unique Spider-Punk persona. Kaluuya, a British Oscar-winning actor, is both developing and co-writing the film alongside Ajon Singh, known for scripting the thriller Primetime.

Background on Spider-Punk and Kaluuya’s Role

Spider-Punk, whose real name is Hobie Brown, is a Spider-Man variant from an alternate universe. This character first appeared in comic books in 2015 and was brought to life on screen with Kaluuya’s voice, who shares a connection to the character’s Camden roots. Kaluuya is best known for his acclaimed performances in Get Out and Black Panther, lending further interest to the spin-off.

Project Status and Relation to Spider-Verse Trilogy

The announcement follows delays affecting the third installment of the Spider-Verse trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse. Initially planned for a March 2024 release, this concluding film was postponed partly due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, which interrupted production. Sony Pictures later scheduled the film for a June 4, 2027 premiere, before pushing it back slightly to June 25, 2027, maintaining the 2027 release window.

Significance of the Spin-Off and Kaluuya’s Ongoing Influence

This spin-off marks a significant addition to the Spider-Verse franchise, offering fans a deeper exploration of alternate Spider-Man versions. Kaluuya’s involvement as developer, co-writer, and likely voice actor underscores his growing role in expanding this universe. Beyond his film work, Kaluuya’s cultural impact was highlighted when London’s Leicester Square announced a statue honoring his iconic Get Out performance, following a fan poll.
