Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood Cuts Walton Goggins’ Cameo—Only in Extended Edition

Walton Goggins had a cameo role in Quentin Tarantino‘s 2019 film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but his appearance was removed from the theatrical release and included only in the extended edition. This cut role marks another collaboration between Goggins and Tarantino, who previously worked together on Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight.

Known for his prominent television work on shows like The Shield, Justified, The Righteous Gemstones, and The White Lotus, Walton Goggins has also built a solid film career with roles in major franchises such as Predator and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His involvement in Tarantino’s films has highlighted his versatility and growing demand as an actor over the past decade.

Walton Goggins’ Voice Role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, starring Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio, is set in 1960s Hollywood and features many of Tarantino’s usual collaborators in various roles. Among these, Walton Goggins recorded a voice cameo for a fictional television commercial advertising Old Chattanooga Beer, which appears in the movie as the favored beverage of characters Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) and Cliff Booth (Pitt).

The commercial featuring Goggins, who adopts an exaggerated Southern accent reminiscent of Coors Beer ads, was intended to play during a scene, potentially on a television in the background or as part of Rick Dalton’s acting work within the film. However, this sequence was removed from the theatrical cut and can only be viewed as a deleted scene on the Blu-ray extended edition.

Additional Deleted Cameos in the Extended Edition

Walton Goggins was not the only actor whose cameo was excised from the main film. James Marsden, known for roles such as in Sonic the Hedgehog, also filmed a faux commercial that was cut from the theatrical version but included in the extended cut. Marsden’s scene promotes Red Apple cigarettes, a fictional Tarantino creation featured in several of his films, including Pulp Fiction—where Mia Wallace famously smokes the brand—and others like Death Proof and Inglourious Basterds.

In the film’s end credits, Rick Dalton himself appears in a Red Apple commercial. Marsden’s deleted scene has him portraying a young Burt Reynolds endorsing the cigarettes, adding another layer to Tarantino’s linked cinematic universe. Like Goggins’ commercial, Marsden’s scene is exclusive to the Blu-ray extended edition.

Importance of These Deleted Scenes in Tarantino’s Universe

These omitted cameos contribute to the intricate world Quentin Tarantino has crafted across his filmography, building subtle connections through recurring fictional brands and characters. Walton Goggins’ Old Chattanooga Beer advertisement and James Marsden’s Red Apple cigarette promo serve as Easter eggs for observant fans and underline Tarantino’s attention to layered storytelling and cinematic detail.

While these scenes did not make the theatrical cut, their inclusion in the extended edition offers audiences deeper insight into the film’s setting and Tarantino’s creative world-building. As Tarantino’s last film release so far, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’s extended version provides additional context and enriches the viewing experience with these carefully crafted cameos by actors like Goggins and Marsden.
