James Gunn, director of the upcoming Superman film and co-head of the DC Universe, shared insights on how the personalities of Superman and Batman shaped the design of their suits. In a behind-the-scenes documentary titled Adventures in the Making of Superman, Gunn spoke with David Corenswet, who plays the Man of Steel, about these creative choices.
The Thought Behind Superman’s Iconic Suit
The documentary revealed that Gunn chose to retain Superman’s classic red trunks from the DC Comics source material, a decision supported by Corenswet during costume fittings. Corenswet explained,
“The thought that I always had was what you said: Superman needs to be huggable,”
—David Corenswet
“And there is something about this [suit] that’s disarming.”
—David Corenswet
Gunn emphasized that Superman’s suit was designed to reflect a warmth and approachability, mirroring the character’s hopeful and powerful nature. Corenswet also discussed how the trunks serve a subtle purpose, jokingly suggesting that the suit’s slightly silly appearance undercuts Superman’s immense power.
Batman’s Suit Expresses His Dark and Fearsome Personality
Gunn contrasted Superman’s costume with Batman’s, highlighting how Batman’s attire captures his darker, more intense temperament. Gunn noted,
“Even with Batman, if I was doing Batman, I’d get into it,”
—James Gunn
“Like, Batman is a f—— maniac. He puts on a scary bat costume and goes out and tries to scare people.”
—James Gunn
This perspective underlines Batman‘s intimidating nature, which is visually reflected through his menacing suit as part of his mission to strike fear into his enemies.
Corenswet’s Role in Preserving Superman’s Classic Look
Earlier discussions with Corenswet revealed that he was instrumental in convincing Gunn to keep the trunks. During a Fandango interview ahead of the movie’s premiere, Corenswet explained the importance of embracing the iconic suit elements, saying,
“You were looking for a way to make them look cool, or you were looking for a function, an explanation to justify having them,”
—David Corenswet
“And my thing was, ‘Maybe they’re supposed to look a little silly?’ Maybe the reason he wears them is to look a little silly. Basically, to undermine how powerful he really is.”
—David Corenswet
