Timothée Chalamet Trains as Ping Pong Pro and Sparks Romance in New ‘Marty Supreme’ Trailer

The newly released Timothée Chalamet Marty Supreme trailer introduces the actor as Marty Mauser, an aspiring ping pong player navigating the 1950s. The story centers on Marty’s relentless ambition despite widespread doubt, following a path fraught with challenges and personal growth.

In the film, Chalamet’s character embarks on a romantic affair with a celebrated movie star portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow, complicating his journey on the road. The ensemble cast also features Fran Drescher as Marty’s mother, alongside appearances by rapper Tyler, the Creator, magician Penn Jillette, and entrepreneur Kevin O’Leary. Abel Ferrara, known for directing Bad Lieutenant, is also part of the project.

Josh Safdie’s Solo Direction and Film Background

Marty Supreme marks a milestone for director Josh Safdie, representing his first solo feature since his 2008 debut, The Pleasure of Being Robbed. This film follows his collaborative work with his brother Benny Safdie on Uncut Gems. Safdie co-wrote the screenplay for Marty Supreme with Ronald Bronstein, and the production team includes Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas, Chalamet himself, and the studio A24.

The Real Marty Reisman and Chalamet’s Preparation

The film is a fictionalized portrayal inspired by Marty Reisman, a renowned ping pong player who earned five bronze medals at the World Table Tennis Championships and passed away in 2012. Cinematographer Darius Khondji highlighted Chalamet’s dedication to authentically embodying the character’s skills.

He wanted to be like a real [professional] ping pong player when he started shooting,

Khondji shared.

Chalamet’s Admiration for the Safdie Brothers

Chalamet has expressed admiration for the Safdie brothers’ filmmaking style, having previously praised their work in an essay for Variety in 2019. Reflecting on their Adam Sandler thriller Uncut Gems, he wrote,

The pair have continuously put out contemporary, raw and untethered work over the last decade, each film building on the traits of the prior, but never once sacrificing their innate grittiness,

underscoring his respect for their uncompromising artistic vision.

Release Date and What to Expect

Marty Supreme is scheduled to premiere in theaters on December 25, inviting audiences to explore a compelling narrative that combines sports, personal ambition, and complex relationships in the mid-20th century. The official trailer offers a preview of Chalamet’s transformation into a determined athlete and the intricate dynamics he encounters on his rise.
