Colman Domingo, the Emmy-winning actor known for his work as a playwright and director, shared a surprising story about almost being recruited into a cult. The incident happened just a few months ago in Mexico City, where Domingo encountered a group that initially appeared welcoming before he realized their true nature. This near-miss cult encounter came to light during a conversation with Josh Scherer on the show Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals.
Details of the Incident and How Domingo Reacted
In the discussion, Scherer questioned Domingo about whether he had joined a cult since moving to Malibu. Domingo responded,
“I almost joined a cult in Mexico City, but that’s another story.”
Despite the group‘s friendly demeanor, Domingo began sensing something was off as he spent more time with them. He said,
“It was just a group of nice people, and then I was like, ‘Wait a minute, this is weird.’ I was like, ‘What’s up with you guys?’”
This experience marked Domingo’s first encounter with a cult. After researching their background, he admitted,
“But as I did research and found out more about them, I’m like, ‘Oh, that’s a cult.’”
His realization prompted him to distance himself before becoming further involved.
Host Josh Scherer’s Similar Encounter
The host of Last Meals, Josh Scherer, also recounted his own experience with a different cult. He explained how they pressured him to join, but he resisted their efforts. Scherer said,
“I said no, and they were just like, ‘No, I think you really should.’ And then I was like, ‘Don’t mess with cults, man. Don’t be the person that talks to too many people.’ And so, I skateboarded away.”
The Broader Significance of Their Stories
These stories highlight how even those in the public eye can unexpectedly encounter such groups and must remain vigilant. Domingo’s near-involvement with a cult reflects the subtle ways these organizations can draw in unsuspecting individuals, often starting with friendliness and community. Their shared experiences underscore the importance of awareness and caution when engaging with unfamiliar groups, especially while traveling or settling in new locations.
