After more than two decades of development challenges, the Kevin Costner Honeymoon Movie Launch has finally taken shape with the film Honeymoon with Harry. The project, now under the Amazon MGM banner, stars Kevin Costner, known for Yellowstone, and Jake Gyllenhaal, famous for Presumed Innocent, and will be directed by Glenn Ficara and John Requa. The screenplay is penned by Dan Fogelman, creator of Paradise. The story centers on a man (played by Gyllenhaal) who embarks on a honeymoon journey with his late fiancée’s father (Costner) following her sudden death just before their wedding.
Honeymoon with Harry is adapted from Bart Baker’s novel and has been stuck in development since 2004, experiencing numerous setbacks. Initially, Mike Karz was involved as producer, with early drafts by Paul Haggis and several renowned actors and directors attached over the years, including Vince Vaughn, Jack Nicholson, Jonathan Demme, Bradley Cooper, and Robert De Niro. The project changed hands multiple times, with New Line’s rights eventually lapsing, before Karz secured a new opportunity to bring the film to fruition with Fogelman, Ficara, and Requa reuniting after their collaboration on Crazy, Stupid, Love.
Current Projects of the Film’s Principal Cast and Creative Team
Kevin Costner continues to focus on his passion project, Horizon: An American Saga, of which the first part released last year while subsequent installments remain unsettled due to ongoing legal hurdles. In addition, Costner hosted the History Channel documentary series The West. Jake Gyllenhaal maintains a strong partnership with Amazon MGM, having recently starred in their successful remake of Road House, with a sequel already underway featuring his return.
Dan Fogelman is actively engaged with Hulu, having completed production of the second season of Paradise and currently casting for an untitled NFL drama series. Although Honeymoon with Harry is still in early development stages, anticipation builds as updates emerge.
Supporting Cast Members Joined by Sterling K. Brown and Julianne Nicholson
The film will also feature Sterling K. Brown and Julianne Nicholson in significant roles, alongside Xavier Collins and Samantha ‘Sinatra’ Redmond. Their involvement adds depth to the ensemble, complementing the leads Costner and Gyllenhaal.
The Importance of This Long-Delayed Release and What Lies Ahead
The launch of Honeymoon with Harry marks a significant milestone in overcoming the persistent challenges that have stalled the project for over 20 years. This release not only reunites a notable creative team but also spotlights the resilience required in bringing complex adaptations to the screen. Given the star power of Costner and Gyllenhaal, along with Amazon MGM’s support, the film is positioned to attract considerable attention upon release. Audiences and industry observers alike will be keen to see how the story’s blend of drama and comedy resonates after such a prolonged development period.
