Sofia Coppola Joins Venice Film Festival Masterclasses with Jane Campion and Alfonso Cuarón in Star-Studded Lineup

The Venice Film Festival has revealed its lineup of masterclasses and onstage discussions, including contributions from filmmakers Sofia Coppola, Jane Campion, Alfonso Cuarón, and Werner Herzog. The event runs from August 27 to September 6 on the Lido, showcasing some of cinema’s most influential voices and providing an in-depth look at their artistic processes.

Lifetime Achievements and New Projects Highlight the Masterclasses

Among the masterclass participants is Werner Herzog, the acclaimed German director who will receive a lifetime achievement Golden Lion this year and will present his newest film, Ghost Elephants. Actress Kim Novak, noted for her role in Vertigo, is also being honored with a lifetime achievement award and is featured in the documentary Kim Novak’s Vertigo. Other masterclass leaders include Jia Zhang-ke, the Chinese director who won the Golden Lion in 2006 for Still Life, Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu, and Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-liang.

The festival hosts four in-depth discussions as part of

“The Art and Craft of Cinema,”

an event organized in partnership with Cartier and La Biennale. Sofia Coppola, who earned the Golden Lion for best film in 2010 for Somewhere, will return with her documentary about Marc Jacobs titled Marc by Sofia. She will be joined by Oscar-winning Italian costume designer Milena Canonero.

Other dialogues include Italian actor and director Sergio Castellitto alongside writer Margaret Mazzantini, Alfonso Cuarón in conversation with film critic Stéphan Lerouge, and Jane Campion paired with English producer Tanya Seghatchia. Campion received the Silver Lion in 2021 for The Power of the Dog, while Cuarón won the Golden Lion in 2018 for Roma.
