Danny DeVito, known for playing Frank Reynolds on the long-running sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, recently shared his thoughts on whether the show will continue beyond Season 18. The series, created by Rob Mac and developed alongside Glenn Howerton, debuted on FX on August 4, 2005. After closer to a decade on FX, the network moved the show to FXX for its tenth season in 2013. The most recent Season 17 aired between July 9 and August 20, 2025, on FXX, with simultaneous broadcasts on FX.
DeVito Reflects on the Possibility of Season 18 Being the Final Chapter
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, DeVito discussed the uncertain future of the series beyond Season 18. FX had previously renewed It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia for four more seasons back in 2020, ensuring the show’s continuation through Season 18. However, no official confirmation has been made regarding additional seasons after that point.
Well, as long as we have a good ending — I don’t know what the ending could be, they probably have one already figured out in their head,
said DeVito, who is 80 years old.
It would be hard to let go, but if it’s right and the audience is happy with it, then I think it’s a good thing to do.

Drawing Parallels to His Experience on Taxi
DeVito also reflected on his previous work on the ABC and NBC sitcom Taxi, in which he portrayed Louie De Palma and earned a Primetime Emmy Award. He recalled how the cast fully embraced the circumstance of their show ending after the fifth season, giving their best performances knowing there was a finite conclusion.
When Sunny comes to an end, we’ll know it and we’ll all embrace it,
DeVito shared.
We really dig each other and we’ll always work together.
The Uncertainty Surrounding Future Seasons
This topic of continuation is not new for DeVito; he and fellow cast member Charlie Day have addressed the questions about the show’s future before. During a conversation with the Los Angeles Times, Day expressed skepticism about a potential nineteenth season. As of now, Season 18 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia does not have a confirmed release date.
What Lies Ahead for It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
DeVito’s cautious but sincere remarks suggest the cast and creators are mindful of concluding the show in a way that satisfies both themselves and their loyal audience. Given the show’s significant run and devoted fan base, the conclusion of It’s Always Sunny would be a major moment in television comedy. The possibility of Season 18 being the final season could mark the end of an era, but the team’s mutual respect and passion indicate that if the series does end, it will do so thoughtfully and with care.
