Nia DaCosta’s ‘Hedda’ Starring Tessa Thompson Set for Intense October 22 Release

Following her work on Marvel’s The Marvels in 2023, filmmaker Nia DaCosta is shifting gears to release Hedda, a contemporary reinterpretation of Henrik Ibsen’s 1891 classic Hedda Gabler. Slated for release on October 22, this film departs from DaCosta’s recent large-scale projects, focusing instead on a more intimate and character-driven story.

DaCosta’s Commitment to a Long-Standing Vision

At the Storyhouse Screenwriting Festival in Dublin, DaCosta revealed her strong motivation to return to the project after years in development.

“I called my team, and I said that I need to make ‘Hedda,’”

she said.

“I had written it years ago, and I said that I really needed to go back to that because this isn’t fulfilling in the way I need it to be.”

—Nia DaCosta, Filmmaker

This decision marks a significant pivot from the spectacle-driven appeal of her recent films toward a story grounded in emotional complexity and dramatic intensity.

A Star-Studded Cast Brings the Story to Life

Leading the cast is Tessa Thompson in the role of Hedda, accompanied by Imogen Poots, Tom Bateman, Nicholas Pinnock, Nina Hoss, Finbar Lynch, Mirren Mack, Jamael Westman, Saffron Hocking, and Kathryn Hunter. DaCosta not only directs but also wrote the screenplay, while producers include DaCosta herself alongside Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Gabrielle Nadig, and Thompson. Executive producers for the film feature notable figures such as Michael S. Constable, Brad Pitt, and Kishori Rajan.

The Story and Themes Explored in ‘Hedda’

Hedda tells the story of its titular character, a woman confined by the constraints of her marriage and a domestic life that feels foreign and suffocating. When an ex-lover reenters her life, she becomes entangled in a fierce internal conflict involving passion, resentment, and a desperate struggle between the desire for freedom and the obligations of duty, ultimately risking self-destruction.

Release Plans and Industry Significance

Amazon MGM Studios will distribute Hedda in select theaters starting October 22. This release is notable as DaCosta’s return to more personal storytelling, underscoring her versatility as a filmmaker who can navigate both blockbuster and intimate narratives. Industry watchers anticipate that Hedda may further solidify DaCosta’s reputation for bringing rich, character-driven stories to a wider audience.
