Jordan Peele Praises Director in New Horror Sports Film Featurette

Universal Pictures is set to release the horror film Him next month, produced by Jordan Peele, which explores the brutal nature of professional football through a terrifying lens. The film’s new featurette reveals how violence inherent in sports can easily be intensified through a horror narrative, combining intense athletic competition with chilling suspense.

Plot Focuses on a Rising Football Star and His Idol

Him, starring Marlon Wayans and Tyriq Withers, tells the story of Cameron Cade, a promising quarterback who identifies deeply with football. During the crucial scouting Combine, Cameron is attacked by a fan, resulting in a serious brain injury that threatens his career. His salvation arrives in the form of Isaiah White, an eight-time Championship-winning quarterback and cultural icon, who offers Cameron refuge and training at his secluded estate.

However, as Cameron’s recovery and training progress under Isaiah’s guidance, the celebrated athlete’s charm masks a darker, more dangerous side that threatens to trap Cameron in a nightmarish situation far beyond football.

Creative Team and Cast Behind the Film

Directed by Justin Tipping and scripted by Zack Ayers and Skip Bronkie, whose screenplay was featured on the 2022 Black List, Him combines horror and sports genres uniquely. The film‘s ensemble cast includes Julia Fox, Tim Heidecker, Jim Jefferies, Indira G. Wilson, and hip-hop artists Guapdad 4000 and Tierra Whack. Along with Peele, producers Ian Cooper, Win Rosenfeld, and Jamal M. Watson are involved in the project.

Director and Producer Discuss the Film’s Unique Blend

The released featurette shows Jordan Peele commending Justin Tipping’s direction, highlighting his success in weaving horror elements into the sports setting. Tipping shares insights into how the film was inspired, providing a fresh angle on the psychological and physical toll of professional sports. Despite Peele’s current focus on directing a new film slated for 2026, Him marks his latest production effort to gain public attention following delays caused by the SAG and WGA strikes.

Release Date and Anticipation

After being postponed from its original Christmas release, Him is scheduled to premiere in theaters on September 19. The delay left some uncertainty, but with the film finally approaching its debut, audiences can expect a thrilling, unnerving exploration of the intersection between sports and horror.
