Ryan Coogler and Mary Corse to Shine at LACMA Art+Film Gala 2023

Director Ryan Coogler and artist Mary Corse will be celebrated at the 14th annual LACMA Art+Film Gala on November 1 in Los Angeles. This high-profile event, known for honoring creatives who redefine their crafts, highlights the exceptional contributions of Coogler and Corse to film and visual art.

Artistic Impact Praised by LACMA Leadership

Michael Govan, LACMA’s CEO and Wallis Annenberg Director, emphasized the transformative nature of both honorees’ work. He noted,

“Mary Corse has continually expanded the possibilities of painting in her exquisite works, which invite us to think deeply about the nature of perception,”

and added,

“Ryan Coogler’s films do something equally transformative. Through masterful storytelling and visual innovation, he reframes history, redefines narratives, and opens new worlds of possibility. Both artists challenge us to see differently whether through a shift in light or a shift in narrative and that is at the heart of what museums aspire to do.”

Event Details and Esteemed Leadership

The gala will be chaired by museum trustee Eva Chow alongside actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio. Gucci continues its role as the presenting sponsor, maintaining a partnership that dates back to the event’s inception. Chow expressed enthusiasm for this year’s honorees and collaborators, stating,

“This year’s gala will be a truly special one as we honor the incredible L.A. artist Mary Corse and trailblazing filmmaker Ryan Coogler,”

and remarked,

“This event wouldn’t be possible without the collaboration of Gucci, our partner since the first Art+Film Gala. We are grateful for their continued generosity to the museum, and we’re especially excited to welcome Gucci’s new artistic director, Demna, to LACMA and the creative community in Los Angeles.”

A Star-Studded Evening Set Against LACMA’s Architectural Landmark

The LACMA Art+Film Gala is recognized as one of Los Angeles’ most glamorous occasions, attracting prominent figures from film, television, music, fashion, and the arts. This year, the celebration unfolds alongside the nearing completion of the David Geffen Galleries, a Peter Zumthor-designed space slated to open in April 2026, further enriching LACMA’s role as a cultural beacon in the city.

Looking Ahead: The Gala’s Role in Shaping Artistic Conversations

By spotlighting figures like Ryan Coogler and Mary Corse, the LACMA Art+Film Gala underscores the power of innovation across disciplines to inspire new perspectives. The event not only raises critical funding but also fuels dialogue about the evolving nature of creativity and storytelling. As LACMA prepares to unveil its new galleries, this gala signals a forward-looking vision that celebrates both tradition and transformation within the arts.
