James Gunn Rules Out Chris Pratt as DCU Batman—What’s Next?

While Robert Pattinson stars as Batman in Matt Reeves’ separate Batman saga, the mainline DC Universe (DCU) will feature a different actor as the iconic Dark Knight. Fans have long speculated about who might assume this vital role in the DCU, with Reacher star Alan Ritchson emerging as a favored candidate. However, DC Studios co-head James Gunn, who frequently casts collaborators from his Guardians of the Galaxy films, revealed in a recent interview that although he values working with Chris Pratt, he does not envision Pratt taking on the Batman mantle in the DCU.

Addressing the topic in a talk with the YouTube channel PelucheEn ElEstuche, Gunn was directly asked about Pratt’s suitability for the role. His response was straightforward:

“As Batman, no. As something, yes,”

he said. He added praise for Pratt’s character and willingness to participate in DC projects:

“Chris Pratt’s one of my best friends. We talk all the time. He’s a great guy, and he would love to do something at DC. I would for him to do something at DC.”

What to Expect for the DC Universe Batman and Its Timeline

Despite ongoing fan discussions regarding the identity of the DCU’s Batman, casting this key character is not an immediate focus for James Gunn. Matt ReevesThe Batman Part II is scheduled for release in October 2027, yet it exists outside the DCU continuity. Gunn has previously stated his intention to avoid having The Brave and the Bold, the DCU’s Batman-centered feature, debut in the same year, pushing its likely premiere to 2028 or later. The timeline will depend heavily on the progress made with the screenplay and how quickly the other Batman film reaches completion.

James Gunn and his team are deliberately pacing the expansion of the DC Universe, aiming to introduce new characters without overwhelming audiences. Plans suggest DC Studios will release one to two films annually, including titles like Supergirl and Clayface set for 2026, with The Batman Part II following in 2027. This conservative release schedule aligns with Gunn’s philosophy of prioritizing script quality and careful production, ensuring no project begins filming without a finalized and satisfactory script.

Challenges and Considerations Surrounding Pratt’s Potential DCU Involvement

Although Pratt has shown a range of acting abilities in the Guardians of the Galaxy series—balancing humor with dramatic moments—Gunn believes Batman is not the ideal role to showcase Pratt’s talents. Additionally, Pratt’s high-profile status might work against casting a widely recognized actor in such an defining role. DC Studios may favor a lesser-known actor, similar to the casting of David Corenswet as Superman, to facilitate audience immersion into the character.

Pratt’s schedule and existing commitments with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), especially with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 confirming his character Star-Lord’s return, also factor into his availability. It is common for actors to appear in both Marvel and DC franchises during their careers, but rarely at the same time. If Pratt does join the DCU, it will be after fulfilling his obligations in the MCU. Gunn emphasized that friendship alone won’t drive casting decisions: Pratt will only be cast if the fit is right for the role.

Future Directions for the DC Universe and Its Cast

As the DC Universe continues to evolve under James Gunn and co-lead Peter Safran, the approach is methodical and strategic. Limiting new introductions to carefully selected characters and focusing on well-developed stories will likely create a more cohesive and compelling universe. Fans anticipating the DCU’s Batman should prepare for a wait, as the project moves steadily through development rather than rushing to meet audience demand.

This cautious strategy signals a shift in how comic book franchises operate, emphasizing artistic integrity and long-term planning over rapid output. Whether Alan Ritchson or another actor ultimately takes up the cowl, the film will likely reflect Gunn’s direction of blending quality storytelling with a fresh perspective on established icons.
