Kim Novak Worried Sydney Sweeney Biopic Will Misread Her Affair Story

Kim Novak, the 92-year-old actress known for her role in Vertigo, has expressed reservations about the new film dramatizing her past relationship with singer Sammy Davis Jr. The upcoming Sydney Sweeney Kim Novak biopic, titled Scandalous, has prompted Novak to worry that it may misinterpret the nature of their romance, which took place in the late 1950s.

Novak feels the film’s title and approach might oversimplify the relationship, reducing it to mere scandal. She explained her perspective in a conversation with The Guardian, emphasizing the deeper emotional connection she shared with Davis.

The True Nature of Novak and Davis’s Relationship During a Turbulent Era

The romance between Novak and Davis was controversial at the time due to widespread opposition to interracial relationships. In 1958, only about 4 percent of Americans approved interracial marriage, and it would take another decade before the Supreme Court legalized it nationwide in Loving v. Virginia. This context added a layer of societal pressure to their private lives.

Sammy Davis Jr. confided in his biographer Burt Boya that he had an ulterior motive during the courtship, wishing

“to get the whitest, the most famous chick in the world and just show ’em”

after facing persistent racism, as detailed by Laurence Leamer, author of Hitchcock’s Blondes. Despite this, genuine affection grew between them.

Novak’s emotions deepened as the media frenzy around their affair intensified. She shared with Leamer,

“Something inside of me rebelled when I was told not to see him,”

and added,

“I didn’t think it was anybody’s business.”

Concerns About Film’s Focus on Physical Aspects Over Emotional Complexity

Novak is apprehensive that the film might emphasize sexual elements at the expense of their relationship’s emotional depth. She said she is

“concerned they’re going to make it all sexual reasons,”

reflecting her hope that the biopic will honor the true complexity of their bond rather than reducing it to sensationalism.

The film project marks a significant collaboration, with Sydney Sweeney portraying Novak and David Jonsson taking on the role of Sammy Davis Jr. Director Colman Domingo, known for his work alongside Sweeney on Euphoria, is making his directorial debut with this feature.

Homage at the Met Gala and Upcoming Honors for Novak

Sydney Sweeney paid tribute to Novak at the Met Gala in May by wearing a black Miu Miu dress reminiscent of one Novak wore in the 1967 film The Legend of Lylah Clare. Domingo also served as co-chair of the gala, highlighting the prominent creative forces behind the biopic.

As anticipation builds around the film, Kim Novak is set to receive a lifetime achievement award at the Venice International Film Festival. On the same day, a documentary titled Kim Novak‘s Vertigo will premiere, offering another perspective on her remarkable life and career.
