As DC Studios continues to develop its vision for the DC Universe, the question of who will portray Batman in the upcoming film The Brave and the Bold remains unresolved. Amidst growing fan speculation, Alan Ritchson, known for his role in Reacher, has been frequently mentioned as a promising candidate, but he recently addressed these rumors in an interview with Variety.
Ritchson acknowledged James Gunn’s admiration for his work but firmly denied that he is set to become Batman.
“Well, it’s not rumor that James Gunn is a fan. He said it himself. And am I a fan of James Gunn? Absolutely. I don’t want to mislead people,”
Ritchson said.
“Words have been exchanged about Batman. But I strongly don’t think that Batman is in my future. I do think there is something in my future with DC. And I would like that to remain true.”
The Speculation Around Ritchson as Gotham’s New Vigilante
The buzz surrounding Ritchson’s possible casting as the caped crusader gained momentum after his performance in Reacher showcased the physicality and intensity expected of Batman’s character. Fans were drawn to his commitment, especially considering he once stated he would play Batman without pay, a declaration appreciated by James Gunn himself.
Despite the excitement, Gunn has remained cautious about revealing any casting decisions. When asked about Ritchson’s potential role, he responded simply,
“let’s just wait and see what happens.”
Because The Brave and the Bold is still in the early scripting phase and scheduled for release no sooner than 2028, these developments will take time to unfold. Gunn has also clarified that the new Batman film will not premiere in the same year as The Batman Part II, which Matt Reeves is currently planning, adding complexity to managing multiple Batman storylines in the DC Universe.
Ritchson’s Future in the DC Universe Looks Promising—But Not as Batman
Ritchson’s recent comments suggest his Batman prospects are unlikely, but they also indicate openness to other opportunities within DC Studios. With James Gunn overseeing the creation of a fresh cinematic universe that includes Superman, Wonder Woman, and other heroes, there are plenty of avenues for Ritchson to join the franchise in a different role.
DC Studios intends to release only one or two major films annually, meaning The Brave and the Bold and its casting choices will not dominate schedules soon. Nevertheless, the expansive DC Universe offers room for Ritchson to take on an iconic character possibly outside Gotham City.
For fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter of Batman’s saga, Ritchson’s confirmation means the search for the Dark Knight continues, but his involvement in DC’s future projects still matters. His connection with James Gunn hints at collaboration ahead, even if not donning the cape and cowl anytime soon.
