Channing Tatum is reprising his role as Gambit in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film Avengers: Doomsday, marking a significant shift from his previous portrayal. While he brought a comedic edge to the character in earlier appearances, this time the actor’s interpretation of Remy Lebeau is expected to be more grounded and serious, reflecting an evolution in tone for the Ragin’ Cajun within the MCU.
Tatum indicated that although Gambit had a playful accent before, studio executives were concerned about how audiences would perceive it. As a result, the actor confirmed he would not utilize the full Cajun accent as he did previously, aiming to strike a balance between humor and drama that aligns with the film’s darker atmosphere.
A More Serious Gambit and a High-Stakes Fight Scene
In a candid interview, Tatum revealed that the directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, prefer to maintain a tight storyline with meaningful moments, avoiding an overly comedic tone typically associated with characters like Deadpool. He stated,
“I’m not gonna go full Cajun,”
and added that the brothers
want things to be funny, but they don’t want to go full Deadpool. They want to keep the drama and keep it tight. When Gambit gets serious — when he drops the Mardi Gras mask — things do matter.

The actor also disclosed that he shares an intense fight scene with Robert Downey Jr., who plays Doctor Doom in the film. This sequence was so physically demanding that it caused Tatum an injury, leading him to develop a pronounced limp and enter physical therapy while production continues.
Sharing insights into his recovery, Tatum explained,
Tatum was sidelined, sitting in for close-ups and allowing his double to take on the heavy stuff. Today, he says, he’s taken the day off his pain meds ‘so I wouldn’t be falling asleep on you and drooling. My body doesn’t do well with codeine — and those painkillers the U.K. docs gave me were strong.’
Tatum’s Past MCU Audition and Production Delays
Aside from his current role, Tatum reflected on an earlier audition for Thor, a part eventually portrayed by Chris Hemsworth. He recounted a memorable experience with director Kenneth Branagh during the audition process, noting the challenge of maintaining stillness under Branagh’s watchful eye. In his words,
“I didn’t really want to be Thor,”
and he also shared,
“But I wanted to audition in front of Kenneth Branagh. After I did one take, [Branagh] was like, ‘You’re not allowed to move. Put your hands on this chair.’ And I froze. He nailed my crutch. I spent the next five years really trying to learn stillness.”
The release schedule for Avengers: Doomsday has undergone notable shifts, with its premiere now planned for December 18, 2026. This delay moves the film alongside its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, which is slated for December 17, 2027. Both projects are directed by the Russo brothers, who return to helm these entries after their previous work on Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
Russo Brothers Aim to Deepen Marvel Storytelling
