Craig Mazin Goes Solo as Showrunner for The Last of Us Season 3

Craig Mazin will serve as the sole showrunner and head writer for The Last of Us Season 3, as Neil Druckmann focuses on his upcoming Naughty Dog project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. This change means Mazin is now entirely responsible for guiding the future of the hit post-apocalyptic series.

Continuity in Production Despite Changes Behind the Scenes

Despite Mazin now leading alone, he emphasizes that much of the production approach remains consistent. Mazin explained that Druckmann

“always had a full-time job running Naughty Dog, so it’s always been me up in Canada,”

highlighting that his solo leadership feels familiar given their previous working dynamic.

Earlier collaborative efforts with Hailey Gross and Druckmann established a solid foundation for the series. Mazin noted,

“We really did get that work in. You can’t really tell half that story without thinking about what the whole story could be,”

referring to how Season 2 only covered part of The Last of Us Part II’s narrative.

Shifting Focus to Abby’s Storyline in Season Three

Season 3 will change its narrative perspective by exploring Abby’s journey, with Kaitlyn Dever cast to take on the role. The storyline aims to delve into Abby’s experiences before, during, and after the events portrayed in the second season, offering viewers a deeper understanding of her character.

Episode Count Expected to Expand

While Season 2 consisted of seven episodes, Mazin signaled the possibility of a longer season three, aiming for a number closer to Season 1’s nine episodes. He said the team is “currently fiddling around” with the details but wants to ensure the new season delivers “more bang for the buck.”

Mazin’s Role as Director and Showrunner

Mazin has directed the opening episode of each season and expressed interest in directing more episodes moving forward. He shared,

“Everything is fitting together tonally. We have directors alternating, and I’m on set doing—I don’t know what you’d call it—’showrunner QC’ sounds insulting to our directors, who are amazing.”

Still, he admitted that balancing both writing and directing remains a challenge and added,

“We’ll see if I can get away with directing more than one [episode].”

Looking Ahead to Season 3’s Release and Impact

The Last of Us will not return to the stories of Joel and Ellie until 2027, but with Craig Mazin now fully at the helm, the series is poised to continue evolving. Season 3 promises to offer richer character development and potentially longer episodes, maintaining interest and anticipation among fans of the franchise.
