Kevin Costner paid tribute to Graham Greene, his co-star in the 1990 film Dances With Wolves, following Greene’s death. The actor and director reflected on Greene’s dedication and talent during their time working together on the Civil War-era Western.
Remembering Graham Greene’s Impact on the Film
Costner highlighted Greene’s commitment to authenticity, especially his effort to learn the Lakota language for his role. He wrote,
“A few things come to mind when I think of Graham Greene and our time together on Dances With Wolves.”
He praised Greene’s ability to convey deep meaning with minimal dialogue, noting,
“He was a master at work and a wonderful human being.”
Greene passed away on Monday in Stratford, Ontario, at the age of 73 due to natural causes after a prolonged illness. Costner expressed gratitude for their shared experience, stating,
“I’m grateful to have been witness to this part of his lasting legacy. Rest in peace, Graham.”
Graham Greene’s Role in Dances With Wolves and Awards Recognition
In Dances With Wolves, Greene played Kicking Bird, a medicine man of the Lakota Sioux tribe. His performance earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the 1991 Academy Awards. Although he did not win, the film itself won seven Oscars, including Best Picture.
Challenges Greene Faced Learning Lakota Language
Born on the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve near Brantford, Ontario, Greene shared in 2023 that learning his lines for the film was especially difficult because he did not speak the Lakota language. He said,
“I don’t even speak my own language,”
and explained,
“We were taught not to speak it. It’s like forgetting your heart.”
Greene committed to studying for
“eight hours a day, seven days a week”
to ensure every scene was performed accurately “word for word.”

Greene’s Continued Success Beyond Dances With Wolves
Over his long career, Greene appeared in more than 200 film and television roles. His credits include The Green Mile, Maverick, two installments of The Twilight Saga, and Die Hard With a Vengeance, as well as TV series such as Goliath, Tulsa King, and Reservation Dogs. The Television Academy noted Greene’s pride in portraying characters outside his Indigenous background. He stated, “I’m a working actor,” explaining,
“I’ve played judges, New York City police officers — a lot of characters that have had nothing to do with a Native North American.”
The Enduring Significance of Graham Greene’s Career
Kevin Costner’s tribute shines a light on Graham Greene’s remarkable contributions to film and his dedication to his craft. Greene’s work in Dances With Wolves and beyond brought authentic Indigenous representation to the screen while showcasing his versatility as an actor. His devotion to learning the Lakota language and his broad range of roles remain a lasting part of his legacy in Hollywood and Indigenous communities alike.
