Jordan Peele’s No Drama Shorts Reveal Spooky New Horror Tales Ahead of TIFF

This year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) will feature a special presentation of horror shorts curated through the Jordan Peele No Drama Shorts initiative. Premiering on Saturday evening, the showcase introduces five chilling films created by a fresh wave of horror talent, blending cultural and societal fears into gripping narratives designed to terrify and provoke thought.

Details of the Five Horror Shorts and Their Creators

The shorts selected for this debut lineup include Imago, Morty, Spilled Milk, Thick Skin, and The Pigs Underneath. These titles emerged from a year-long, non-exclusive program initiated last fall by Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions in partnership with TIFF and Universal Filmed Entertainment Group. The program aims to produce proof-of-concept and short films that explore horror through various lenses, including culture, time, environment, and societal issues. The featured directors—Chandler Crump, Charlie Dennis, Helena Hawkes, Jared Leaf, and Ariel Zengotita—were each awarded a $50,000 grant from TIFF to bring their stories to life for this occasion.

Inspiration Behind the No Drama Shorts

The stories developed under the No Drama Initiative encourage filmmakers to delve into their deepest fears and personal monsters. TIFF posed the question to the creators:

“What’s your biggest fear? What monsters lurk in the deepest corners of your inner thoughts?”

— a prompt that drove each director’s unique exploration into psychological and supernatural terror. The completed films will be screened on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at TIFF Lightbox’s Cinema 1, marking their world premieres.

Support and Praise from Industry Leaders

Jordan Peele expressed enthusiasm about revealing the work of these new voices, stating,

“Over the past year, we’ve had the pleasure of watching our first five ‘No Drama’ filmmakers bring their stories to life. We couldn’t be more excited to unveil these films at TIFF and see where they go next,”

ahead of his opening remarks at the event. Alongside Peele, Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer and TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey will also address attendees. Following the screening, the filmmakers will engage in a Q&A session moderated by Jacqueline Coley from Rotten Tomatoes.

Peter Cramer emphasized the innovative approach of Monkeypaw Productions and the initiative’s importance:

“Jordan and his team at Monkeypaw have redefined genre filmmaking by challenging conventions and pushing boundaries,”

he said.

“Their ‘No Drama’ initiative gives five talented new voices the access, mentorship, and platform to showcase their own groundbreaking work, in partnership with TIFF, which has been the launchpad for so many incredible filmmakers through the years. On behalf of the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, we are thrilled to join Jordan, Monkeypaw, Cameron, and TIFF in debuting these exciting new stories for audiences around the world.”

Technical Collaborations and Production Support

During the production of these shorts, Monkeypaw collaborated with notable industry companies to provide in-kind support ensuring high-quality filmmaking. Key partners contributing across all five shorts included Mathematic Film (visual effects), Company 3 (audio and color finishing), Signature Post (sound design), and Format (music supervision and licensing). For camera equipment, Panavision supplied packages for Morty, Spilled Milk, Thick Skin, and The Pigs Underneath, while Sony provided the Sony Mini Rialto camera for Spilled Milk, marking it as only the second project to utilize this equipment after F1. Cooke Optics furnished lenses for Imago, and MBS Equipment Company delivered lighting and grip gear for multiple films including Morty and Imago.

Anticipation and Next Steps for No Drama Filmmakers

Tickets for the No Drama Shorts screening are presently available to the public, promising audiences a night of innovative and unsettling horror. The shorts feature performances by actors including Scott Mescudi, Brandon Perea, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Keyla Monterroso Mejia, further heightening expectations. The showcase not only previews bold new horror stories but also serves as a launchpad for these emerging directors, who are expected to have expanding careers in genre filmmaking following this exposure.
