Ryan Reynolds Teases Avengers: Doomsday Role but Denies Set Visit

Conflicting information has emerged regarding Ryan Reynolds’ involvement as Deadpool/Wade Wilson in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. While some trade outlets suggest Reynolds will return, others report he has not yet been confirmed, leaving fans uncertain about his role in the film. The speculation comes amid the film’s ongoing production and growing anticipation from Marvel audiences.

Reynolds Responds to Questions During Toronto Film Festival

During press events at the Toronto International Film Festival for the documentary John Candy: I Like Me, which Reynolds produced alongside director Colin Hanks, Entertainment Weekly inquired about potential Deadpool Easter eggs in Avengers: Doomsday. When asked to confirm his participation, Reynolds offered a playful and ambiguous answer rather than a straightforward confirmation.

“There’s four that I’ve got in there,”

Reynolds joked to Entertainment Weekly.

“Of course, I’ve written them all at home in my PJs, and nobody’s seen ’em nor have I stepped foot on set. But, yeah, that’s about as far as I’ll go on that one.”

The Growing Buzz Following Reynolds’ Social Media Post

In August, Reynolds ignited fan speculation by sharing an image featuring a spray-painted “A” atop the familiar Avengers logo, causing many to believe it was a hint for his Deadpool return in Avengers: Doomsday. The upcoming movie will feature Robert Downey Jr. reprising a villainous role as Doctor Victor von Doom and will connect the Avengers with the X-Men universe. Channing Tatum, confirmed as Gambit—who previously appeared alongside Reynolds in Deadpool & Wolverine—is also part of the cast.

Reports remain divided, as The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision newsletter affirmed Reynolds’ comeback, while Deadline presented a contrary account. Marvel representatives have declined to clarify the situation.

Deadpool’s Character Draws from John Candy Inspirations

Reynolds also discussed subtle John Candy references woven into the Deadpool franchise, including a nod to the film Planes, Trains and Automobiles in Deadpool & Wolverine through a coffee mug featuring the title of John Candy: I Like Me.

“Part of it is that character of Wade Wilson is in a highly militarized shame spiral; [he] sort of lives in that state that has all kinds of maladaptive coping mechanisms,”

Reynolds explained.

The character to me is really a blend between Neal Page and Del Griffith

—the roles played by Steve Martin and John Candy in the 1987 John Hughes comedy.

The only difference is that he’s manipulative in which toggle he pushes at what time.”

Anticipated Release Dates and Future Expectations

John Candy: I Like Me is scheduled to premiere on October 10 via Prime Video. Meanwhile, Avengers: Doomsday is currently in production and is slated for a theatrical release on December 18, 2026. With its multiverse storyline expanding Marvel’s cinematic universe and connecting characters like Deadpool and Gambit, the film’s eventual cast confirmations and Easter eggs are highly awaited by fans worldwide.
