Dwayne Johnson is undergoing a significant weight loss transformation to portray a 70-year-old man in the upcoming film Lizard Music. The actor, known for his muscular build, is adapting his physique to fit the unique demands of this new character.
Preparing Physically for a Dramatic New Role
The 53-year-old former wrestler and Hollywood star is collaborating once again with director Benny Safdie, known for The Smashing Machine. The film is based on Daniel Pinkwater‘s novel, which tells the story of a boy who befriends a mysterious figure called the Chicken Man in his quest to find an invisible island inhabited by intelligent lizard musicians.
Johnson revealed during a career retrospective at the Toronto Film Festival that he is actively shedding the 30 pounds of muscle he gained for his role as MMA fighter Mark Kerr in Safdie’s earlier film.
“This is me slimmed down. In the process of slimming down. I still have a long way to go … I’m so excited to get a chance to hopefully transform again like I was able to do in Smashing Machine,”
Johnson said, noting that the transformation involved changing his diet and “eating less chicken.”
A Whimsical Adventure with a Mysterious Mentor
Johnson described Lizard Music as a whimsical story centered on a boy who stumbles upon a late-night broadcast featuring lizards playing music. Through a hidden door, the boy encounters the Chicken Man, who leads him on an imaginative journey. Johnson fondly recalled Safdie pitching the story to him shortly after their previous collaboration, which convinced him to take on the quirky new role.
“And after about 45 minutes, this pitch ended and I said, ‘I am your Chicken Man.’” —Dwayne Johnson, Actor
Breaking Away from Typecasting in Hollywood
This role marks a notable shift for Johnson, who admitted to feeling pigeonholed in past action and comedy roles. At the Venice Film Festival, where The Smashing Machine received a 15-minute standing ovation, he expressed a strong desire to explore his dramatic range and take on more diverse characters.
“I just had this burning desire and this voice that was saying, ‘Well, again, what if?’” —Dwayne Johnson, Actor
“But what if there is more and what if I can? And a lot of times it’s harder for us, or at least for me, to know what you’re capable of when you’ve been pigeonholed into something. When you’re in Hollywood, as we all know, it had become about box office and you chase the box office.” —Dwayne Johnson, Actor
“And the box office in our business that we know is very loud and it can be very resounding, and it could push you into a category and into a corner. And ‘This is your lane’ and ‘This is what you do’ and ‘This is what people want you to be’ and ‘This is what Hollywood wants you to be.’” —Dwayne Johnson, Actor
Embracing Personal Fulfillment Over Industry Expectations
The actor, known for blockbuster hits like Jungle Cruise, expressed that he no longer feels compelled to prove himself to Hollywood but seeks to follow his own creative path. He reflected on the choice between conforming to industry norms and pursuing his true aspirations.
“I don’t think it’s anything to prove to Hollywood as much as it’s just for me now. And the truth is, I looked around a few years ago, and I started to think, ‘Am I living my dream or am I living other people’s dreams?’” —Dwayne Johnson, Actor
“You could either fall in line and go, ‘Well, it’s status quo. Things are good. I don’t want to rock the boat.’ Or go, ‘No, I want to live my dreams now and do what I want to do and tap into the stuff that I want to tap into.’” —Dwayne Johnson, Actor
This transition not only highlights Johnson’s versatility as an actor but also signals a more introspective phase of his career. His commitment to the demanding physical transformation for Lizard Music underscores his dedication to authenticity in storytelling, promising a compelling performance that departs from his previous action-packed roles.
