James Gunn, director of Superman and co-CEO of DC Studios, has officially confirmed that the sequel titled Man of Tomorrow will begin filming in the near future. The follow-up to the recent summer hit will feature a significant alliance between Superman and Lex Luthor, who join forces to face a formidable new enemy.
Details on Plot and Release Date Revealed
Speaking on Howard Stern‘s Sirius XM talk show, Gunn shared insights about the movie‘s storyline and timing.
“It’s gonna be out in two years, July 9, 2027, which is a relatively a short time between sequels, because we knew immediately where we were going,”
he said. He added that the film focuses not only on Superman but equally on Lex Luthor:
“And it is a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together, to a certain degree, against a much, much bigger threat. And it’s more complicated than that. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I relate to the character of Lex Luthor, sadly.”

Teased Villain and Thematic Elements
Though the exact villain remains officially unconfirmed, early promotional art depicts Lex Luthor in his recognizable battle armor alongside Superman. The logical assumption points toward Brainiac, a classic adversary with deep-rooted animosity toward both characters. This potential villain fits well within the narrative, especially considering Luthor’s longstanding resentment toward Superman’s powers and status.
Gunn elaborated on Luthor’s mindset, explaining,
“That’s the center of Lex for me. Three years ago, before Superman came along, he was considered the greatest guy in the world, even with other metahumans and superheroes in the world. And then in one fell swoop, this guy comes in wearing a silly costume, with dimples, and a charming smile, and a great chin, and he’s forgotten.”

Production Status and What to Expect
Currently in pre-production, Man of Tomorrow is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. The film promises to deepen the complex relationship between Superman and Lex Luthor while introducing a powerful threat that forces them into an uneasy alliance. Superman fans and DC Universe followers can expect a narrative that balances action with character-driven storytelling, advancing the broader DC narrative on screen.
