Marlon Wayans is gearing up to bring his signature comedic style back to theaters with Scary Movie 6, aiming to spoof modern horror films. The actor and comedian, who co-founded the original spoof franchise with his brothers Shawn and Keenan Ivory Wayans, is actively developing the revival and has shared insights on the horror titles that will inspire the new installment’s humor.
Classic and Recent Horror Franchises Set for Spoofing
When asked by Comicbook.com about which films would be featured in the upcoming parody, Wayans expressed his enthusiasm for the genre, highlighting well-known franchises. He mentioned that elements of I Know What You Did Last Summer and the Scream series will factor into the comedy, both of which have seen recent legacy sequels.
Wayans stated,
“I’m just a fan of the whole genre, man,”
and added,
“I Know What You Did Last Summer may have something in there. I think the Scream franchise is always a great one.”
Incorporating Recent Hits and Diverse Horror Films
In addition to these established franchises, Wayans indicated plans to parody newer popular horror films. He mentioned titles that have attracted attention in recent years, aiming for a broad and current range of horror references. The list includes the impactful movie Get Out, as well as Hereditary, Longlegs, and Nope. Wayans expressed excitement about the variety of material available, saying,
“There are just so many great horror films to pull from that we plan on having a field day.”
He also added the recent movie Sinners to the mix, highlighting the team’s intention to provide fresh and relevant comedic content for audiences.

Returning Cast Members Reunite for the Revival
Fans of the franchise will be pleased to learn that Regina Hall and Anna Faris will return to reprise their roles as Brenda and Cindy, respectively, continuing their onscreen friendship. The duo shared their excitement about reconnecting with the Wayans brothers and the project team in a joint statement:
“We can’t wait to bring Brenda and Cindy back to life and be reunited with our great friends Keenen, Shawn, and Marlon — three men we’d literally die for (in Brenda’s case, again).”
The Wayans Brothers’ Return After Nearly Two Decades
Marlon Wayans confirmed via social media earlier in 2024 that the original creative team behind Scary Movie is returning.
“After nearly 20 years, the Wayans brothers are finally going to give the fans what they’ve been asking for… a return to the SCARY MOVIE franchise!”
he announced, adding,
“We’re looking forward to having fun on the big screen again.”
Legacy of Scary Movie Franchise and Upcoming Release
The original Scary Movie debuted in July 2000 and became a major hit, grossing $278 million on a $19 million budget by cleverly spoofing famous releases such as Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Sixth Sense, and The Shining, while also referencing comedies like American Pie. Its sequel, Scary Movie 2, focused on haunted house films including The Haunting and The Exorcist, earning $141 million from a $45 million budget and taking shots at movies beyond horror, like Mission: Impossible.
After the Wayans brothers left following the first two films, the series continued under the direction of comedy icon David Zucker, with entries released in 2003, 2006, and the 2013 sequel Scary Movie 5, directed by Malcolm D. Lee and co-written by Zucker.
This new chapter marks the Wayans brothers’ first collaboration on the franchise in 18 years, where they will serve as producers and writers. Scary Movie 6 is scheduled to premiere on June 12, 2026.
