James Gunn Confirms Third Cast Member for Superman Sequel Filming 2026

Director James Gunn has revealed that Rachel Brosnahan will return as Lois Lane in his upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, scheduled to begin filming in 2026. This announcement was made during a Q&A session on Threads, where Gunn emphasized Lois’s significant role in the story, confirming her importance to the film’s narrative.

Gunn previously shared the movie’s official title, Man of Tomorrow, along with striking artwork created by DC Comics president Jim Lee, featuring Superman alongside Lex Luthor in his signature green-and-purple armor. The film is set for release on July 9, 2027, and Gunn clarified that the title does not include the word “Superman.”

Exploring the Relationship Between Superman and Lex Luthor

The upcoming film will continue the story that began with the 2025 Superman movie but will not follow a traditional sequel format. Speaking on SiriusXM’s Howard Stern Show, Gunn described the plot as focusing on an alliance between Superman and Lex Luthor against a much greater threat.

“It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat. It’s more complicated than that but that’s a big part of it. … It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie. I loved working with Nicholas Hoult. I relate to the character of Lex, sadly. I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. I just love the script so much.” —James Gunn, Director

David Corenswet will reprise his role as Clark Kent/Superman, while Nicholas Hoult returns as Lex Luthor, now uneasy allies rather than adversaries. Both actors have acknowledged the project on social media, sharing Jim Lee’s promotional artwork, while Gunn engaged with fans through comments teasing the upcoming production.

“See you on set in not too long!” —James Gunn, Director

Historical Context for the Superman-Lex Alliance

The concept of Superman and Lex Luthor joining forces is not without precedent. In DC Comics’ Silver Age era, Clark Kent and Lex Luthor were once childhood friends in Smallville before their relationship turned hostile. Over time, they have occasionally partnered to confront larger menaces such as Brainiac and Imperiex. Man of Tomorrow appears to draw on this complex history to explore their reluctant cooperation.

Supporting cast members Isabela Merced and Edi Gathegi, known for their portrayals of Hawkgirl and Mr. Terrific respectively, have publicly celebrated the sequel’s development. This points to the possibility of the Justice Gang characters playing significant roles once again.

Filming for Man of Tomorrow is set to commence in April 2026, following which audiences can expect the film to hit theaters in July 2027. With James Gunn at the helm, the movie promises a fresh take on the Superman saga, focusing on unexpected alliances and intricate character dynamics.
