Heming Willis said on GOOD MORNING AMERICA Tuesday.
Challenges and Realities of Dementia Care Revealed in Interviews
In addition to sharing this update, Heming Willis reflected on the emotional difficulties she encountered upon learning about Bruce’s condition. She acknowledged the pressures caregivers often face from societal expectations and self-judgment.
I knew it was coming, she said on CBS MORNINGS, highlighting the stigma caregivers confront. She emphasized the importance of flexibility in caregiving.
I think for each caregiving journey is our own, each care plan is their own. You have to be ready to sort of be nimble and be able to pivot,
she explained.
But most importantly to do what is the safest for your person and for your family.
Family Support and the Role of Loved Ones in the Journey
Bruce Willis’ family includes his three adult daughters from his marriage to Demi Moore, along with his two daughters with Heming Willis. Emma Heming Willis expressed gratitude for having her family’s support throughout this challenging period.

I’m so blessed to be able to have them on this journey. You know, we just love and support Bruce so much. Our life is very simple. Our life is really simplified, and there’s something really beautiful about that, just being able to be in these moments that are so fleeting,
she shared.
New Book Explores Strength and Hope in Caregiving
Emma Heming Willis has authored a book titled The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, which chronicles her family’s experience and offers guidance to others navigating similar caregiving roles.
I wrote the book that I wish someone had handed me on the day we received the diagnosis,
she said, explaining her motivation behind the project.
I realized that the unexpected was born from this idea that I have the time, the energy, the access and the resources to be able to take the wisdom and insight from this journey that I’m on still and bring in experts and specialist,
Heming Willis added, reflecting on the book’s collaborative nature.
Practical Advice and Emotional Support for Caregivers
The book aims to alleviate the constant strain caregivers endure by providing clear and actionable advice. Heming Willis hopes to ease the burden on others who might feel overwhelmed by decision-making and caregiving demands.
I think that caregivers are so fatigued with making decisions all the time,
she said.
I really want to just put some actionable, tangible ideas into this book so that caregivers don’t have to think too hard. Sometimes I just want someone to tell me, like, tell me what to do because we’re so maxed out.
Health Risks Caregivers Face and the Importance of Self-Care
Heming Willis highlighted alarming statistics about caregiver health, noting that a majority die before individuals they care for and many neglect their own medical appointments due to lack of support.
I was floored by it, and it was the wake-up call I needed. I needed to hear that so I could understand and start to really take my own health seriously and prioritize it,
she said, emphasizing the need for caregivers to value their own well-being.
I didn’t know I was allowed to ask for help,
she admitted.
I’ve always been very self-sufficient and independent, and I’ve really had to unravel that because I realize I needed to raise my hand and know that I wasn’t a failure because I was asking for help.
Early Signs of Dementia and the Emotional Impact of Diagnosis
Bruce Willis’ symptoms began subtly but gradually altered his behavior, making diagnosis difficult at first. Emma Heming Willis described the shock and confusion she experienced when faced with this uncertain path.
I walked out with nothing, no hope, no direction, no road map, nothing,
she recalled.
I was stunned. And that is how this unexpected — from that traumatic moment was where that book comes from.
