In her upcoming film, Christy, Sydney Sweeney has confirmed that every fight scene was performed without stunt doubles or camera tricks. The Euphoria actress, who portrayed boxer Christy Martin, explained that all the boxing sequences involved genuine physical contact, contributing to the film’s realism. This commitment to authenticity highlights the film’s intense and immersive portrayal of Martin’s career.
Actors Engaged in Actual Physical Combat During Filming
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Sydney Sweeney revealed that she and her co-stars were exchanging real punches throughout the shoot. She stated,
“Every single fight you see, we are actually punching each other. We are going full force. I always believed that you would not be able to make it feel real if it’s a stunt double or if it’s faking the hits,”
emphasizing the dedication to genuine combat intensity onscreen.
Despite her background in martial arts, including jujitsu and kickboxing, Sweeney noted the challenge of adapting to boxing’s distinct style. She elaborated,
“My stances and a lot of my technique is different than boxing. You square up differently, and of course, you don’t get brought to the ground – everything’s on your feet,”
highlighting the technical shift required for the role.
Rigorous Training and Physical Transformation for Christy Martin Role
To accurately portray the International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee, Sydney Sweeney underwent significant physical preparation. The actress gained over 30 pounds, committed to strength training, and practiced boxing intensively for several hours each day over three months. Her dedication to embodying Christy Martin’s look and fighting style was praised by the film’s director, David Michôd, who said,
“She wanted to do the work. She wanted to train, she wanted to fight, she wanted to transform herself, and we were going to need all of that.”
