James Gunn’s Superman Reboot Shows Metropolis’ Epic, Casualty-Free Destruction

James Gunn’s Superman reboot has positioned itself as 2025’s top-grossing superhero film, combining solid box office success with generally positive critical reception. Released by Warner Bros. Pictures this summer, the movie sets the tone for the DC Universe (DCU) reboot by showcasing the city of Metropolis being spectacularly destroyed without a single casualty, largely due to timely evacuation efforts and Superman’s intervention.

Depicting Metropolis’ Destruction with Careful Attention

The film’s portrayal of Metropolis’ devastation stands out for its careful handling of civilian safety, a notable shift from previous adaptations. DC Studios co-CEO highlighted the importance of showing the city’s evacuation during the climactic action, enhancing the realism and emotional impact of the scenes. Artist Victor Martinez contributed new concept artwork illustrating the large-scale destruction wrought by Lex Luthor’s scheme, emphasizing that despite the city’s ruin, no lives were lost, contrasting sharply with the grim outcomes of earlier movies like the 2013 Man of Steel.

James Gunn’s Vision of a Unique DC World

Promoting the movie, James Gunn compared Metropolis’ disaster scenarios to California’s natural hazards, noting,

I mean, I live part of the time in California, and we have fires and earthquakes, so it’s about the same,

he said.

It’s just that there aren’t as many fires and earthquakes in Metropolis, just more Kaiju.

Gunn’s metaphor captures the blend of familiar and fantastical elements that characterize his approach to the DCU reboot.

Gunn further explained his intention behind creating a distinct alternate reality through the DC Universe’s setting:

I wanted to create a universe that was different from ours. One of the things I liked about DC was it wasn’t our world, it was another world, it was Gotham instead of New York, it was Metropolis instead of whatever, it was Star City and Central City and all of these different places, it was like a fictional world and so I wanted to create this other planet, this other reality, that’s what I love doing.

This imaginative world-building underlies the freedom Gunn embraces for storytelling, as he concluded,

If you destroy New York in the MCU, it’s, I mean, it’s heavy to destroy any city, but anything can happen in the DCU. We can destroy anything at any time. We could destroy a continent. It could happen. It gives you the freedom to do what you want,

giving audiences an expectation for bold storytelling choices in the rebooted franchise.

Strong Ensemble Cast Brings New Life to Iconic Characters

James Gunn’s Superman features David Corenswet in the lead role of Clark Kent/Superman, supported by Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult portraying Lex Luthor. The robust ensemble also includes Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría, Wendell Pierce, Alan Tudyk, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Neva Howell, and Milly Alcock. This cast bolsters the film’s mix of action, humor, and emotional depth.

A Fresh Superman Defined by Hope and Compassion

The film presents a Superman driven by deep compassion and a firm belief in humanity’s goodness, aligning with James Gunn’s vision for the character. Critics have praised the movie as “a beautiful, moving thrill” with Corenswet delivering a standout portrayal of the Man of Steel. It was noted,

A beautiful, moving thrill, David Corenswet is the perfect Man of Steel in a movie packed full of ideas. Fortunately, under James Gunn’s expert direction, all of those work, creating a rousing experience that flies higher than DC has in a very long time.

Looking Ahead to the Future of the DC Universe

With the upcoming Man of Tomorrow film on the horizon, James Gunn’s Superman sets a promising foundation for the continued expansion of the DC Universe, particularly its depiction of Metropolis. The movie’s balance of spectacle, thoughtful character development, and world-building suggests a hopeful and ambitious path for the franchise. As audiences experience this reimagined Superman in theaters and on digital platforms, anticipation builds for more stories that live up to the boldness and creativity Gunn has brought to the DCU reboot.
