Sean Astin has been chosen as the new president of SAG-AFTRA, the union representing actors and media professionals across film, television, and radio. The election results were revealed on Friday, September 12, with Astin securing 79% of the vote, defeating challenger Chuck Slavin, a member of the New England local board. Astin succeeds Fran Drescher and will now lead the organization through a pivotal period, emphasizing actor advocacy and member support.
Alongside Astin’s election, Michelle Hurd was elected secretary-treasurer. Hurd is known for her role as Raffi Musiker on Star Trek: Picard and recently appeared in Netflix’s You season 5.
Sean Astin’s Vision for SAG-AFTRA’s Future
After his election, Astin expressed enthusiasm about guiding SAG-AFTRA beyond recent challenges. He stated,
“Now is a time for optimism and creativity. I am thrilled that the members have allowed me to lead our storied organization out of this challenging moment and into a future defined by confidence, progress, and fierce advocacy.”
This outlook reflects his commitment to promoting growth and resilience for the union’s 160,000 members during his two-year term.
His increasing involvement within SAG-AFTRA over the past six years, especially throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, has prepared him for this leadership role. Astin notably served on the negotiating committee during the 2023 actors’ strike, gaining firsthand experience with labor discussions that will be crucial in upcoming talks.
With contract negotiations scheduled to begin in 2026 with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), Astin’s role will be central in advocating for fair and respectful agreements. AMPTP issued a congratulatory statement and expressed their anticipation of collaborating with Astin.

Reflecting on his predecessor’s efforts, Astin praised Fran Drescher’s leadership during the recent strike and committed to building upon that work. He pledged
“to approach any negotiation with an open mind and an open heart, but also with absolute resolve that our dignity and our legitimate needs be understood.”
Responsibilities Ahead and Balancing Acting with Leadership
Astin’s presidency extends through September 2027, and he will be eligible for re-election once his current term ends. While president, he is expected to continue his acting career to some extent. His predecessor, Drescher, also appeared in television roles and films during her tenure, suggesting that Astin’s leadership will primarily take place behind the scenes.
Aside from possible public appearances such as the annual SAG Awards, most of his efforts will focus on representing members’ interests, improving working conditions, and developing programs to benefit performers in the constantly evolving entertainment industry.
The Significance of Sean Astin’s Election for the Acting Community
Sean Astin’s election as SAG-AFTRA president resonates with many fans and actors alike, given his iconic roles in generation-defining films like The Goonies and The Lord of the Rings. His deep roots in acting are further symbolized by his family legacy—his late mother, Patty Duke, served as president of SAG, SAG-AFTRA’s predecessor, between 1985 and 1988.
This historic connection highlights Astin’s longstanding commitment to the acting community and strengthens his position as an advocate for performers’ rights and well-being.
