Joe Cole Joins Cast as Production Launches in Australia

Joe Cole is the latest addition to the cast of Amazon MGM Studios’ submarine thriller Subversion, starring Chris Hemsworth. The project has officially begun filming in Queensland, focusing on key scenes that will utilize the water tank facility at Village Roadshow Studios, known for supporting highly technical productions. No official release date has been announced, but reports indicate an expected launch sometime next year.

Screen Queensland revealed additional cast members including Lily James, Michael Peña, Simone Kessell, Robert John Burke, and David Wenham. Jacqui Feeney, CEO of Screen Queensland, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, stating,

We are proud to continue our ongoing collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios which has recently included the productions Balls Up, The Bluff and Voltron. Subversion further cements the trust that has been established with our local crew base.

She added,

Subversion will benefit from Queensland’s growing expertise on high-end, highly technical action productions, as well as the water tank infrastructure at Village Roadshow Studios and the capabilities of our innovative virtual and post-production businesses.

Plot and Creative Team Behind the Action Thriller

The film centers on a naval commander portrayed by Hemsworth, who is coerced by a cartel-like group to pilot a submarine transporting illegal cargo through perilous international waters. The storyline escalates as he faces off against a Coast Guard officer, played by Lily James, amid life-threatening situations both inside the submarine and at sea.

Patrick Vollrath directs the movie, with a screenplay by Andrew Ferguson. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is the producer, supported by executive producers Stephen Shafer, Greg Cohen, and E. Bennett Walsh, bringing together a team experienced in delivering intense drama and action.

Queensland’s Role in Supporting Major Film Productions

The choice of Queensland and the facilities available at Village Roadshow Studios underlines the region’s growing reputation for accommodating complex, technically demanding films. This production adds to an increasing number of international projects utilizing the local crew and infrastructure, further showcasing Australia as a competitive filming destination.

Subversion’s development represents both a continuation of successful partnerships between Amazon MGM Studios and Screen Queensland and a significant step for the action thriller genre set underwater. The film’s eventual release will likely capitalize on Hemsworth’s star power and the appeal of high-stakes maritime drama.
