Jessica Chastain, known for her role in The Help, recently opened up about her decision to return to school. The 48-year-old actress appeared on Late Night With Seth Meyers on September 15 to share insights into why she is pursuing a Master’s degree in public administration at Harvard University. This decision marks a significant moment in her personal and professional life, highlighting her commitment to education.
Motivations Behind Earning a Harvard Degree
Chastain described the diverse environment of the Harvard program, where students come from all over the world, including many who are future politicians. She made her intentions clear about her goals:
“There’s people from all over the world in this program. And you know a lot of…there’s a lot of future politicians,”
she explained.
“There’s a lot of politicians from their countries there right now. I’m not there to be a politician. I’m there to fight politicians,”
she added, emphasizing her purpose in pursuing the degree is to advocate for change rather than enter politics herself.
Experience as a Student Among Classmates
When asked by Seth Meyers about the reaction of her classmates upon recognizing her, Chastain noted that although there were a few selfies taken on the first day, the attention quickly settled down.
“…no one has made a big deal out of it,”
she commented, showing that she has been able to blend into the academic environment without disruption.
Educational Milestones and Personal Growth
Jessica shared a poignant reflection on her educational journey, revealing that she is the first member of her family to attend college. She confessed that for much of her life, she doubted her academic abilities and did not consider school to be for her. Now, she expressed a passion for learning that has surprised her.
“I’m the first person in my family to go to college. And for so much of my life I thought, you know, it’s the cycle of your family. I thought I wasn’t very smart, and I didn’t think school was for me. And I just love it,”
she said sincerely.
Memorable Moments in the Classroom
Jessica also recalled a memorable interaction with one of her classmates from India in a quantitative methods class. Their conversation began with the classmate asking about Jessica’s previous work, leading to a surprising shared interest.

“She goes, ‘Have you been in something I might have seen?’ And I go well, ‘Do you like science fiction?’ She said, ‘Yes.’ I was like, ‘I was in a movie called Interstellar,’ and she looked at me and she goes, ‘That’s my favorite movie,’”
Chastain recounted with a smile.
