Leonardo DiCaprio Honors Robert Redford’s Environmental Legacy

Leonardo DiCaprio recently paid tribute to Robert Redford, remembering both his iconic Hollywood career and his influential environmental activism. Redford died on September 16 at his home in Utah at the age of 89, surrounded by family and friends. DiCaprio’s environmental tribute highlighted Redford’s lasting impact on climate advocacy and the arts.

Robert Redford’s Decades-Long Dedication to Environmental Causes

Over more than fifty years, Robert Redford became a leading figure in environmental activism, collaborating closely with the Natural Resources Defense Council to advance climate policies, protect Indigenous rights, and safeguard public lands. Starting in the 1970s, he helped halt a coal-fired power plant in Utah and later backed major environmental initiatives like the Paris Climate Agreement and the Inflation Reduction Act, the most significant clean energy legislation in U.S. history.

Redford and his wife, Sibylle Szaggars, established The Way of the Rain, a nonprofit that raises climate awareness through artistic projects and performances. Additionally, Redford joined forces with his late son James to create The Redford Center in 2005, an organization supporting films and initiatives focused on environmental justice and climate change.

Reflecting on Redford’s commitment at the London premiere of One Battle After Another, DiCaprio said,

“More so than anything, he was a staunch environmental leader and member of the NRDC like me, and fought for Indigenous rights — the list goes on and on. We lost a legend today.”
