Matt Reeves Teases New Villain, Keeps Robin’s Role Secret

Director Matt Reeves recently discussed plans for Matt Reeves The Batman 2, highlighting ongoing preparations for filming set to begin in late April with Robert Pattinson returning as Bruce Wayne. While Reeves acknowledged that many characters from Batman’s lore have been considered for the sequel, he remains tight-lipped about Robin’s possible involvement.

Open Debate Over Robin’s Role in the Sequel

During an interview with Josh Horowitz, Reeves clarified that The Batman: Part 2 continues as a distinct DC Elseworlds project, separate from James Gunn’s overarching DC Universe. In the early stages of developing the script alongside co-writer Mattson Tomlin, Reeves revealed that the creative team explored a wide array of characters, including Robin. When asked directly about the character’s inclusion, Reeves explained,

“Well, sure, you talk about everything. There is probably not any character that we didn’t talk about. What could this be? What could that be? That’s part of the beginning of anything.”

The Focus on Bruce Wayne and a Unique New Villain

Reeves emphasized that the sequel centers on deepening Bruce Wayne’s story, particularly by introducing a villain tied intricately to his past. He described the villain selection process as one that digs into Wayne’s history and personal life. Addressing the new antagonist, Reeves commented,

“Picking the right villain that digs into what that does, that sort of goes into his past and his life. That was what drove that discussion. I won’t tell you where we ended up, but we’re super excited about it, and I will say it’s never really been done in a movie before.”

Interaction with James Gunn and Future DCU Possibilities

Reeves also responded to James Gunn’s recent remarks expressing a wish for Reeves to direct a film within the DC Universe. Addressing potential involvement beyond the Elseworlds story, Reeves stated that while they have discussed theoretical possibilities, no concrete plans exist. He remarked,

“We haven’t talked about anything like that, we have had conversations about how things would work in general. Of course it would be a lot of fun. I want to play out the stories we began and arrive at the conclusion that I hoped we’d arrived at the beginning.”

Production Timeline and Future Gotham Projects

Pre-production for The Batman: Part 2 is active, with filming expected to commence around late April or early May. Robert Pattinson is confirmed to return as the titular character, having already reviewed the script. While spin-off projects, such as the upcoming Penguin series, are under discussion, Reeves prioritizes completing the sequel before pursuing any Gotham-centered expansions.

This cautious approach suggests Reeves aims to preserve narrative focus and deliver a compelling continuation of Bruce Wayne’s journey before branching out, maintaining a balance between character development and expanding the Batman universe.
